This book was first published in 1930 with an introduction by Mary Calderone and 24 photographs of "everyday things" by her father, Edward Steichen. The book was commissioned to assist young children in recognizing and naming objects. This is one of the few children's books to use photographs, and they constitute some of the most appealing, yet least known of Steichen's work. In his afterword to this new edition, John Updike reflects upon childhood and memory as evoked by the book.
