Excerpt from The Schoolmaster
Ascham, at eighteen, newly-made Bachelor of Arts, had spoken among his companions against the Pope. How the good Master of the College then joined an official favour to a private kindness, Ascham tells in his Schoolmaster, as may be seen on pages 155 - 157 of this edition. Ascham commenced m.a. On the 29th of June, 1537, when in his twenty-first year, and in the following spring he paid a visit to his parents, whom he had not seen during the seven years of Cambridge study towards graduation. He lectured on Greek at St. John's College, and also for the University, and for two years, from the end of 1539, he was Mathematical Lecturer to the University.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book, a valuable contribution to the field of education, examines the best practices for educating young minds. The author draws from classical sources such as Cicero and Plato to argue that fostering a love of learning through gentle encouragement is far more effective than harsh discipline. The author cautions against the common practice of using fear and punishment in schools, maintaining that such methods stifle curiosity and create an aversion to learning. Instead, the author advocates for a nurturing environment where students are guided with kindness and understanding. This approach, the author suggests, not only promotes academic achievement but also cultivates virtuous character and a lifelong appreciation for knowledge.
