Riassunto

The #1 New York Times best-selling series.

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.   A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

“A tense, moving, and wondrously strange first novel. The photographs and text work together brilliantly to create an unforgettable story.”—John Green, New York Times best-selling author of The Fault in Our Stars

“With its X-Men: First Class-meets-time-travel story line, David Lynchian imagery, and rich, eerie detail, it’s no wonder Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children has been snapped up by Twentieth Century Fox. B+”—Entertainment Weekly

“‘Peculiar’ doesn’t even begin to cover it. Riggs’ chilling, wondrous novel is already headed to the movies.”—People

“You’ll love it if you want a good thriller for the summer. It’s a mystery, and you’ll race to solve it before Jacob figures it out for himself.”—Seventeen

Recensione

Occasionally scary, often funny and always downright charming, it comes as no surprise that the film rights have already been sold to 20th Century Fox. With a sequel recently announced for release in the Spring of 2013, there has never been a better time to get acquainted with Miss Peregrine and her home for peculiar children. One of a kind, this is an utterly compelling and truly unforgettable book...Alternative Magazine Online, Nov, 2011...Truly, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a terrific thing, beautifully presented and confidently composed, and perfectly poised - I kid you not - to inherit the legions of readers searching for the Next Big Thing to attend midnight launches of. Overlook it at your own peril....The speculative scotsman, October, 2011... is a wonderful novel and most definitely the sum of its parts. Though it may not be as dark as the cover suggests, it is a wholly enjoyable read, an amalgamation of fantasy, historical fiction, and coming of age stories. The photos that accompany the novel are a wonderful addition and show the extent of Rigg s dedication to Miss Peregrine s Home for Peculiar Children. Definitely worth reading whatever age you are. --Thirst for Fiction, July, 2011....

one of the most original and captivating books that I have read in a number of years. The use of authentic, vintage found photographs throughout is truly inspired, especially when taking into account that, with the exception of a few that have undergone minimal post-processing, they are unaltered. These photographs are used sparingly and their inclusion always makes sense it is a true testament to Ransom Riggs storytelling prowess that the photographs included never feel like they are dictating the path of the story. The text and images successfully come together to form an organic, symbiotic whole that delivers one of the most unusual, inspired and captivating books of the 21st century. Miss Peregrine s Home for Peculiar Children is a modern day masterpiece that is as much a joy to hold and look at Quirk Books have seemingly spared no expense if the luxurious presentation and premium paper quality are anything to go by as it is to read. One of a kind, this is an utterly compelling and truly unforgettable book. --Alternative Magazine, November, 2011

This is an unusual story, with none of the hackneyed concepts that so often clog up the pages of young adult fantasy. The old photographs have a certain poignancy, even though some of them are quite crudely manipulated. They're put together to tell an original tale with a sweet sub-plot about thwarted love. It's funny in places as well, such as when Jacob is put in his place by cheeky friends or pestered by wannabe rappers. Jacob himself starts off unsure of his place in the world and rather directionless, more of a drifter than a fighter, but he's not so spineless as to lose our sympathy whilst he makes this journey of self-discovery. Yet the overall tone is tense and dark, like the echo of musty, abandoned places and mysteries of the past best kept hidden. It's an authentically creepy book...WarpCore SF, Oct, 2011....This is a book for boys and girls of all ages from confident reader young teens all the way up to readers in their 80s and 90s. If you don't like horror then please do not ignore this book for fear that it will scare you. Yes, there are a handful of creepy moments but it is certainly not a scary story. This is a book for readers who love stories that take them away from the world they think they know, and if you want something different in your reading diet then Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children is the book for you. --The Bookzone for Boys, August, 2011
