'The history of Camper & Nicholsons is the history of yachting.' This casual remark, overheard by John Nicholson at one of the London Boat Shows, is, in fact, very close to the truth. For Camper & Nicholsons was founded at Gosport before organised salt-water yachting had even started. And the rise of William Camper coincided closely with that of the Royal Yacht Squadron and the explosion in popularity of the sport after the visit to the Solent of the schooner America in 1851. By the time Ben Nicholson took over in 1863. the foundations of a successful yacht-building business had been firmly laid, and he and the succeeding generations of his family cemented the firm's reputation for being the Rolls-Royce of the yacht-building industry. Each has, in his way, under- pinned that well-deserved reputation: Ben's son, Charles E. Nicholson, is acknowledged as being the greatest acht designer of his generation; his nephew Charles A. Nicholson -Young Charlie to everyone in the yachting business - designed some seminal yachts in the South Coast One Design and the Jolina Class; while Young Charlie's sons, Peter and George, have made significant contributions to the modern yachting scene. What makes the story of Camper & Nicholsons so unusual is the sheer quantity and quality of the vessels they have designed and constructed over two centuries. There is almost nothing they have not built: from steam yachts to skimming dishes, from the magnificent J-Class to the humblest cruising ketch, from experimental metre boats to the sleek modern motor yacht, from the commercial coaster to he firm's hugely successful series of GRP sailing boats. But that is not all, for during two world wars Camper & Nicholsons' yards produced small warships, landing craft, flying boats, experimental commando canoes, and a rather peculiar craft called the SLUG. As an Admiralty spokesman wrote, their war effort was 'no mean achievement'. Lavishly illustrated with 10 sensational colour pull-outs plus three hundred photographs, line drawings, and paintings, many of which have never been published before, this is indeed the history of yachting in all its glory - and more besides.
