The title of this book is taken from Fellini's 1954 film of the same name; the editor takes the film as a parable of Italy at the end of World War II, after the country had been abused by Mussolini and marking what may be viewed as an end of innocence in Italy. With the rise of film as a medium and visible destruction throughout the country, postwar Italian photographers took to the streets in search of a modern vision; their images are by turns arresting, amusing, haunting, and so distinctive to their time and place as to act as both art and documentation. This publication provides a brief historical and contextual introductory essay (printed in both English and Italian), but the bulk of the book is prints of black-and-white images from over 60 photographers of the era, all intriguing, beautiful, and a distinctive record of both time and place.
