[Paris 1749 Prevost de Exile]. Single folded sheet engraving size: 16 x 22.5 cm., map size 14 x 20.5 cm., original hand- colored pastel outline, title cartouche in lower right, very bright copper etching, navigational symbol, nicely executed. . *** **** *** . . A RARE & EARLY 1749 COPPER-ETCHED HAND-COLORED MAP . . . A STUNNING EXAMPLE SHOWING THE SOUTH COAST OF CHINA, . . . CANTON RIVER ESTUARY, DOWN THE EAST COAST OF VIETNAM, . . . TONKIN, ANNAN, CAMBODIA, CHAMPA & MEKONG DELTA . . . INCLUDING THE ISLANDS IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA: . . . HAINAN, THE PARACEL & LUNELLAS ISLANDS . . * This early map of the eastern coast line begins from just above Canton and the Pearl River estuary down to the Riviere Oubeqame [Mekong River] in old Cambodia before that area was taken over by Cochin-china. Southward down the coast showing all of the coastal towns and cities, islads, rivers, to the Riv. de Cambodia. Shows from 123-132 longitude and 23 to -10 degrees south latitude. . * A good view of Guangxi and Guangdong provinces, the coast, islands in Golf of Tonkin, all of Hainan Island, the Paracel, all of the other small Island groups: Paracel, Lunellas, Poulo Tama &c. . The Tsiompa [Champa], [old Cambodia, before Vietnam took it over], including a good view of Isle de Hainam. With a good list of the coastal cities: Tanchouikiang, Riviere de Tunquin [actually the Red River] where it dumps in to the Gulf of Tonquin near Haiphong, and several other rivers noted, as well as coastal cities within Tonkin [North Vietnam] and Annam [South Vietnam] areas. . A very early view of the hitherto less well-know East coasts to Europeans. An excellent view of the coast and coastal waters of Vietnam, Cambodia and China. With excellent focus on Vietnam. This pre-dates the French invasion and forceful takeover of Vietnam and ultimate Laos and Cambodia, as a colony, renaming that area "Inndochine." . *** THE CARTOGRAPHER Jaques N. Bellin [1703-72]: . He was a French cartographer who drew the maps to accompany PREVOST'S HISTOIRE GENERAL DES VOYAGES 1738-1775], from which this map was extracted, it is from vol. 2, no. 3. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** CONDITION: The work is very clean, solid and without flaw. . It was hand-colored using gauche over 100 years old. As usual when these colors oxidize it leaves traces on the verso, a kind of 'proof' of old hand coloring. . This map orignially 3 folds, it is now nicely pressed flat, looking very clean. The folds are barely visible when viewed flat. . An above average, exceptionally clean example, no issues. All in all an excellent map. . *** REFERENCES: . R. V. Tooley: TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY OF MAPMAKERS, p.49 for other details. . *. Codice articolo 20023201
