Dr Nevil Maskelyne Stripple-engraved portrait. Nevil Maskelyne (1732-1811) was a fellow of Trinity College Cambridge, a Fellow of the Royal Society, a member of the American Philosophical Society, and the fifth British Astronomer Royal. In this role he presided over the Longitude reward and became the first person to scientifically measure the Earth's mass. In 1804, Maskelyne's portrait was featured in the European Magazine, a monthly publication that ran from 1782 until 1826, which had been established by John Sewell but at this time run by James Asperne. The portrait shows Maskelyne in a curled and powdered peruke, sitting by a window through which an observatory is visible. Codice articolo 18150
