First Edition (SD, NAP). You can see the covers in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. I don't see any soiling at all. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. There is a crease with crinkling at the bottom edge of the spine and just adjacent off the bottom edge of the front cover. The cover edges are in excellent shape, no rubbing. There is no rubbing at any of the corners either. You can see that teeny tiny crease above the front bottom corner. The page edges are very clean. I don't see any soiling. The book is square and the spine look straight. The binding is solid from cover to cover. The covers are nicely, tightly bound. The interior of the book is in very good shape. There is some tanning on the half-title page, off its juncture with the facing verso of the blank front end paper. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any soiling at all. I'm also not finding any creasing on any of the pages. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's in solid shape but has several imperfections, all of which you can see the photos. There's a little chip off the front bottom edge, a sliver of loss at the top edge of the spine and just adjacent on both sides, a little wear with a couple of tiny tears at the bottom edge of the spine, a thin tear off the top edge of the rear cover. There is also a thin, slightly dark area on the front cover that goes through the 'J' in the author's name (which for some reason the scanned photo is not picking up), and on the rear cover there is that vertical tannish line. The spine is also toned. The flaps are in solid shape. I don't see any tears or soiling. There is a thin bit of toning at three of the front flap's edges, one at the top edge of the rear flap. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I have had it in a fitted protective cover all the years that I have owned the book. From the dust jacket: 'The novel as a whole is remarkable for the extreme power and conviction with which it is written, for the wonderfully persuasive character-drawing-- Lucius, in particular, is likely to remain in the reader's memory long after he has finished the book-- and for the brilliantly subtle and original use of the English tongue. Here, one feels, is a born writer, a writer to watch.' 'Jennifer Anne Mary Alleyne Lash Fiennes, also known as Jini Fiennes, was an English novelist and painter. In 1961, she published The Burial, her first novel, at the age of 23. Lash was regarded as one of the most promising young people among England's artists at the time. Upon meeting Lash in Suffolk, Dodie Smith, who wrote The Hundred and One Dalmatians, remarked that Lash was 'almost too interesting to be true.' She married Mark Fiennes in 1962, the year in which her second book The Climate of Belief was published. There were seven children from the marriage, including actors Ralph Fiennes and Joseph Fiennes, film makers Martha Fiennes and Sophie Fiennes and composer Magnus Fiennes.'. Codice articolo 005523
