8vo. A very nice married set of the two-volume American Edition, with Volume II being a 1st Edition and Volume I an early edition. The discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen in late 1922 sent shock waves around the world and turned Carter into an instant celebrity. Carter had discovered " best preserved and most intact pharaonic tomb ever found in the Valley of the Kings, and the discovery was eagerly covered by the world's press." In these two volumes, Carter documents the discovery, the spectacular cache of ancient treasures and the process of managing the entire affair. Black and white illustrations abound, including a diagram of the tomb, and many photographs of its treasures. Volume I, slightly smaller than Volume II, is bound in gold cloth with titling in black. 334pp. This volume displays only the copyright date of 1923, which is the original British 1st Edition date, but not a date of actual printing in the U.S., which would have been in 1927 at the earliest. Volume II is bound in red cloth with titling in gilt, 408pp. Both volumes with square tight bindings, clean interiors, save for a small previous owner signature to front endpaper of Volume II and the bookplate of renowned architectural historian Edward Chappell to the front pastedown of Volume I. Mild rubbing and edge wear. Each volume presents handsomely in clear archival mylar. Chappell was a Colonial Williamsburg Foundation leader and made Williamsburg, Virginia his home since 1980 when he was hired to rebuild and direct the Architectural Research Department at Colonial Williamsburg. He retired in 2016, by then holder of an endowed chair, the Shirley and Richard Roberts Director of Architectural and Archaeological Research. His education and early work experience were preparation for this career appointment and for a wide variety of special projects in Virginia, Annapolis, Charleston, Jamaica, Bermuda, Antigua, and elsewhere. Taken together, they earned his reputation as a leading preservationist and historian of early Atlantic-world architecture. A handsome set of an uncommon title. Codice articolo 17976
