Anche molto tempo dopo l'avvento della stampa a caratteri mobili, la scrittura a mano ha continuato a conservare un suo fascino tutto particolare, fino a diventare una vera e propria arte, degna di essere descritta e codificata in appositi trattati. Fu in particolare nel Cinquecento italiano che, accanto al trionfo definitivo dell'editoria, il dibattito teorico sulla scrittura a mano fu più fecondo e serrato. E che a quel secolo appartenga la più gran parte della produzione libraria (anche manoscritta) intorno ai modi di scrivere e ai processi del loro apprendimento lo hanno ampiamente dimostrato le ricerche che dalla fine dell'Ottocento a oggi sono state condotte sia in Italia (Giacomo Manzoni, Emanuele Casamassima, Armando Petrucci), sia, soprattutto, nel mondo anglosassone (Stanley Morison, Alfred Fairbank). A questi approcci, di tipo tradizionale, questa Collana intende affiancare altre prospettive di approfondimento che, considerando le piú recenti acquisizioni storiografiche (per esempio i dibattiti intorno all'epistolografia e sulla figura del segretario, o le questioni sollevate dal lessico tecnico e specialistico), hanno come scopo la migliore penetrazione del dettato dei trattati di scrittura di quel secolo. Della stagione cioè nella quale il fenomeno divenne di portata europea. In quell'aureo secolo infatti alla scrittura, anzi al disegno dei caratteri dell'alfabeto, in ogni regione del continente dedicarono cure artisti, cartografi, umanisti, tipografi (tra gli altri Albrecht Dürer, Giovanni Mercatore, Geoffry Tory, Claude Garamond). Tutto era cominciato nel 1514 con la Theorica et pratica de modo scribendi dell'ingegnere ferrarese Sigismondo Fanti.
