A collection of 10 4 sided sheets, showing design suggestions for using 18 Nebiolo typefaces, the majority of which were designed by Aldo Novarese and Alessandro Butti, jointly and individually. Designs by Novarese, contained in a card folder, and originally issued as an insert in the magazine La Rivista Linea Grafica. Undated, mid 1960s? Pubblicazione uscita come allegato alla rivista "Graphicus" in cui Novarese proponeva un sistema di classificazione degli stili dei caratteri da stampa. La teoriaÂsi basava sull'analisiÂdel tratto terminale del carattere, il piede, ma anche sulÂvalore estetico e sui riferimenti storici associati al carattere. Novarese elencava quindi dieci tipologie di caratteri tipografici: lapidari, scritti, medievali, ornati, veneziani, egiziani, transizionali, lineari, bodoniani e fantasie.ÂA ciascuna delle dieci tipologie erano ascrivibili, quindi, alcuni tipi di caratteri. Ad esempio nei bodoniani sono compresi: Quirinus, Bodoni, Normandia stretta, Romano moderno, Normandia; nei lineari sono inclusi: Cairoli, Microgramma, Semplicita', Narciso, Etrusco, Piacenza, ecc.ÂAldo Novarese, nato a Pontestura (Alessandria)Âe' l'autore di oltre 100 famiglie di caratteri tipografici che influenzarono il design italiano e internazionale del 900. Alessandro Butti, direttore dello studio artistico della fonderia Nebiolo di Torino, lo chiamo' nel 1938 come suo collaboratore. Novarese partecipo' poi alla seconda guerra mondiale rischiando la morte per fucilazione in due occasioni. Tornato dalla guerra, riprese a lavorare per la Nebiolo legando il suo nome alla fonderia per oltre quarant'anni e subentrando nel 1952 a Butti come direttore artistico ricoprendo il ruolo fino al 1975. Nel 1978, alla chiusura della Nebiolo, Novarese prosegui' come disegnatore di caratteri freelance per i maggiori produttori mondiali. Mori' nel 1995 lasciando in eredita' una vasta serie di caratteri tipografici tra i quali si ricorda il Novarese, che prese il suo nome, carattere con grazie di richiamo cancelleresco. "Novarese si inserisce a pieno titolo nella storia del disegno del carattere tipografico e si colloca, in ambito internazionale, a livello di altri importanti creatori di caratteri della seconda meta' del XX secolo quali il francese Roger Excoffon, lo svizzero Adrian Frutiger e il tedesco Hermann Zapf" (Fioravanti, Passarelli, Sfligiotti, "La grafica in Italia", 1997, p. 124).
