XV), «un libro en sí pequeño» (brevis), pero «de mucho peso» (tantum ponderis) por el nombre y la autoridad (nomen, auctoritas) de quien lo escribió: san Basilio el Grande. El caso de este tratado basiliano, escrito en un elegante griego, es peculiar: supone el encuentro definitivo entre la cultura clásica y la cristiana, bases de nuestra cultura europea. Con intención fundamentalmente pedagógica, el autor exhorta a aprovechar debidamente la literatura griega en todo lo que nos conduzca a la virtud. Se trata de coger la rosa sin espinas, ser Odiseo sin dejarse seducir por las Sirenas. Constituye una propedéutica, un ejercicio preparatorio para acceder a las Sagradas Escrituras con garantías de absoluta comprensión y disfrute. Asimismo, también fueron verdaderos ejemplos de conducta ciertas figuras de la Antigüedad, como Pericles, Euclides o, especialmente, Sócrates. Basilio el Grande sigue a Orígenes en un principio básico: la coherencia en el comportamiento, la adecuación de las palabras y la forma de vida, la firmeza en las convicciones. Por su parte, la Exhortación a un hijo espiritual (traducida al español por primera vez) fue atribuida al mismo Basilio a lo largo de los siglos en diversos períodos. Actualmente prevalece la opinión contraria a su autenticidad. En cualquier caso, se trata de un precioso manual de edificación espiritual escrito originalmente en latín hacia el año 500. Mediante una acertada argumentación, Basilio logra su propósito final: despertar la devoción de sus oyentes y exhortar a la imitación; sin dejar de lado, en alguno de los panegíricos, su postura ante las herejías en auge. El segundo conjunto de discursos, las Homilías contra las pasiones, nos transmite imágenes de la vida cotidiana en Capadocia durante la época imperial y es una fuente de información de gran valor para la historia de la moral y las costumbres de la época. Basilio, observador minucioso, logra vívidas descripciones que le proporcionan argumentos contra aquellos que obran en oposición al ideal evangélico. Este volumen ofrece la primera traducción española de su obra Contra Eunomio, en la que Basilio refuta las ideas sobre la Trinidad que Eunomio de Cízico expone en su escrito Apología, cuya traducción también ofrecemos. El arriano afirmaba que el Hijo es de distinta naturaleza que el Padre, por cuanto la naturaleza del Padre es, en su opinión, ser no engendrado, mientras que el Hijo es, en cambio, un ser engendrado. Basilio insistirá entre otras cosas en que Padre e Hijo son conceptos que se exigen mutuamente y en que todo padre genera transmitiendo su naturaleza a su hijo. La obra de Basilio tiene también el mérito de acercar la teología homeusiana, partidaria de insistir en que la Trinidad está compuesta por tres hipóstasis o personas, a la teología nicena, que resaltaba más la unidad de naturaleza entre el Padre y el Hijo, al que definía como «consubstancial» al Padre.
