Bottego, ufficiale d'artiglieria nativo di Parma, dopo le prime esplorazioni in Dancalia, nel periodo 1892-93, si diede alla risalita del fiume Giuba, corso d'acqua che nasce in Etiopia, attraversa la Somalia e si getta nell'Oceano Indiano. Durante questa spedizione Bottego raccolse molte varieta' animali e botaniche, in seguito confluite nel museo Bottego di Parma e in parte descritte anche in quest'opera. ITA.
