Softcover. Condizione: Good. Illustrated. Grass Valley was named for its spring-fed meadows, but its history springs from deep below the soil. An immeasurable wealth of gold lay in ancient river courses, embedded in quartz, or scattered capriciously in surface gravel. Vibrantly entrepreneurial since its inception, Grass Valley echoed with the roar of stamp mills crushing gold-bearing quartz 24 hours a day, every day, for decades. Its mines produced $350 million, and millions more are thought to be buried beneath the modern city. Grass Valley's wealth drew flamboyant stars like Lola Montez and gold-camp-urchin-turned-star Lotta Crabtree. It was here that philosopher Josiah Royce was born and Cherokee writer Yellow Bird (John Rollin Ridge) lived his final days. Grass Valley was often the subject of Alonzo Delano's tales of the gold rush, and more recently, it was the setting and inspiration for Wallace Stegner's best seller Angle of Repose.

Back cover lists other publications and Keepsakes by the Book Club of California. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Minuscule bump in the upper-right corner of the front cover. A Fine copy. Excerpt from the Introduction: "Quite naturally, the reader will become acquainted with mainly seamen (the crossing of the North American continent by land was not yet truly a reality), most of whom sailed for the French Navy or for commercial French traders. Even the two doctors listed among these Frenchmen (one of whom was also a scientist) performed their profession aboard ships. Less typical, yet no less interesting, are the missionary and the diplomat who round out this list of explorers. Taken together, these twelve enrich our understanding of the precursors to what could be called the 'French Rush' to California in the middle of the nineteenth century, that one motivated by far more golden reasons." The following figures are highlighted in this Keepsake with brief biographies and histories: "Jean-Francois Galaup de Laperouse," "Pierre-Francois Peron," "Camille-Joseph de Roquefeuil," "Gabriel Lafond (de Lurcy)," "Auguste Bernard Duhaut-Cilly," "Jacques Edmond le Netrel," "Paul-Emile Botta," "Gustave Duboc," "Alexis Bachelot," "Abel Aubert Dupetit-Thouars," "Cyrille Laplace," and "Eugene Duflot de Mofras.".

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. PAUL FRENZENY (illustratore). . One of only 425 printed Fine. Artist Paul Frenzeny, a Frenchman of noble descent, strict military training, and encyclopedic knowledge, became one of the leading "special correspondents" in the United States and Europe in the days when woodcuts, rather than photographs, were used to illustrate newspapers. In 1873, Frenzeny undertook a year-long sketching tour of the frontier for Harper's Weekly, with fellow artist Jules Tavernier. This 100-sketch assignment proved to be an irresistible subject for author Claudine Chalmers, who then followed the Frenchmen's careers after their journey's end on the Pacific Coast. As she patiently gathered Frenzeny's subsequent illustrations in the Weekly, Dr. Chalmers discovered that he had depicted San Francisco's Chinese culture in all its pageantry and intensity, at a time when most of the white population, within California and across the country, reviled the pioneering Chinese laborers and repressed them in every way possible. Paul Frenzeny's Chinatown Sketches explores in detail the seventeen illustrations of San Francisco's Chinese quarter which the artist drew between 1874 and 1882, at four different points of his career and four stages in the fortunes of that secretive community. The images have been carefully reproduced with exquisite fidelity, at or near original size. One of only 425 printed. Large format hardcover (10 by 14 1â4 inches), only leafed through once. Without the sales prospectus. With 19 wood engravings by Paul Frenzeny, including three double-page foldouts. Bound in decorative boards with a silk brocade spine and letterpress- printed endpapers featuring the artist's drawing of Chinese acrobats. Ships from Hawaii.

This celebration of French art in California spans the period of the earliest New World voyages of French sea captains with their complement of classically trained artists, draftsmen, and scientists, to the Franco-American children of French Gold Rush artists, whose late nineteenth-century Impressionistic paintings forever mar- ried the artistic legacy of the two nations. This collection of 80 images, many of which appear in print for the first time, contains paintings, sketches, lithographs, and photographs that informed and intrigued the artistic and scientific worlds and ordinary people as well. Paired with the exquisite plates are biographical essays on twenty-eight of the artists.
