"Il duello" (1891) è certamente tra i capolavori della narrativa di Anton Cechov (1860-1904), e forse il lungo racconto che più di ogni altro possiede le caratteristiche di un vero romanzo. Protagonisti sono due giovani, Laevskij e von Koren, quasi due opposti per temperamento e cultura. Il primo ha tutti i tratti di un discendente di quella ricca galleria di "uomini superflui" che venne inaugurata nella letteratura russa da Puskin e da Lermontov il secondo, invece, pare un'emanazione diretta di quelle teorie di impronta darwinista che ebbero larga fortuna, anche in Russia, nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento. E non va dimenticato che anche ne "I fratelli Karamazov" di Dostoevskij, che iniziarono ad essere pubblicati poco più di una decina di anni prima, c'è, magari sottotraccia ma costante, una netta polemica nei confronti di quel darwinismo sociale tendente a giustificare la prevalenza del più forte sul debole. Intorno alle figure dei due giovani, ruotano gli altri personaggi, a cominciare dalle due protagoniste femminili, Nadezda Fédorovna e Mar'ja Konstantinovna, la prima tutta persa nella sua vanità, la seconda letteralmente intrisa di una convenzionalità sconcertante. Come scrive Marilena Rea nella prefazione: «Il duello è la storia di una contesa tra due uomini, è lo scontro ideologico tra le grandi teorie ottocentesche sull'uomo, è un'immensa partita a due che si gioca contemporaneamente su più livelli, fino alla resa finale che, per quanto priva di quei colpi di scena che l'autore aveva così in odio, risulta comunque inaspettata e, soprattutto, inconsueta nel panorama della produzione cechoviana». &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp.
