In-folio (367x225mm), pp. (8), XLIII, 987, (5), legatura coeva in piena pelle con dorso a nervi adorno di titolo in oro entro tassello rosso e ricchi fregi floreali entro scomparti. Unghie decorate in oro, tagli rossi, sguardie marmorizzate. Frontespizio in rosso e nero con xilografia raffigurante Pegaso in volo. Testo bicolonne greco e latino. Dedica a stampa del curatore a Federico Augusto di Sassonia, seguita da altri scritti critico-prefatorii dell'Olearius stesso. Indici alle pp. 958 e sgg. Restauri al dorso (abilmente ricostituito nella parte inferiore), diffuse bruniture interne, tipiche della carta dei libri tedeschi del Sei-Settecento. Un'annotazione coeva al frontespizio. Glosse marginali di antica mano ad alcune pp. Discreto stato. Monumentale edizione lipsiense delle opere complete di Filostrato, fra cui la Vita di Apollonio di Tiana (composta da Filostrato su commissione di Giulia Domna, moglie di Settimio Severo e devota ad Apollonio), curata e annotata da Johann Gottfried Olearius. Grande interesse destava in quel tempo la personalità di Apollonio di Tiana, filosofo neo-pitagorico del I sec., ambigua figura di sapiente o di mago in fama di santità per la vita che aveva condotto. Filostrato vuol presentare in Apollonio il tipo ideale dell'asceta neo-pitagorico, liberando la sua figura dalle accuse di magia che i suoi oppositori solevano muoverle. Forse Giulia Domna desiderava che, attraverso quest'opera, la figura di Apollonio apparisse come quella d'un Cristo pagano da opporre a quello venerato dai Cristiani; certo più tardi lo scritto di Filostrato fu usato ed ebbe larga diffusione per questo scopo. Ierocle, proconsole di Diocleziano in Bitinia, e persecutore dei Cristiani, se ne servì esplicitamente per dimostrare come non solo santi cristiani potessero compiere miracoli (Carla Schinck in Dizionario Bompiani delle Opere, I, p. 212).
