Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal brochure, 21*27 cm. Condizione: Gut. Second ed. 32 p., numerous ill., including 103 ill. of chairs and tables. Cover slightly rubbed, otherwise a good and very clean copy. Text bilingual Dutch and English. - Gerrit Thomas Rietveld is born in Utrecht in 1888. After elementary school he starts working in his father's cabinetmaking shop at the age of eleven. The furniture he makes here are mainly imitations of old styles, ornamented with woodcarving. This kind of furniture is found in most interiors of the time. In 1911 he starts his own cabinet-making business in Utrecht. He takes up an evening course in architectural drawing at the architect P. J. Klaarhamer's, and carries out Klaarhamer's furniture designs, which - in contrast with the style-imitations - have simple designs and few ornamentations. Klaarhamer's work is inspired by the thoughts and ideas of Berlage, who, at the beginning of the century, was an innovator in the field of architecture and industrial design in Holland. At Klaarhamer's Rietveld meets the former's best friend, the painter and stained-glass artist Bart van der Leek, who is in the process of simplifying his figures and colours, and who in this period also collaborates with Berlage as colour-adviser. Partly through the influence of these surroundings, where simple forms are strived after, Rietveld starts making simple furniture out of cheap, standardized materials. Later, he says about the red-blue chair (nrs. 1, 2 and 3) - which at first is still plain and has side planes: '[.], that chair was made to the end of showing that a thing of beauty, e.g. a spatial object, could be made of nothing but straight machined materials. So I had the plank sawn into strips and laths, and the centre part I sawed in two halves, so that I had a seat and a back then, and with those laths of various lenghts I constructed the chair.' (from an interview with Piet Mook, 1963). He uses loose pegs for the construction, allowing the laths to overlap, so that the material used remains recognizable. The architect R. van't Hoff, another friend of Klaarhamer's, on seeing this furniture urges Rietveld to meet the Stijl-group, of which he is a member himself. Condizione: New. The foremost designer of the De Stijl group, and the author of its most iconic product, the 1917 Red and Blue chair, Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) stands today as one of the last century's most adventurous designers and architects. The iconicity of the Red and Blue chair, and of the Rietveld Schr xF6;der House in Utrecht (which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000), have perhaps overshadowed the incredible scope and longevity of Rietveld's career, for this consummate modernist polymath designed on every scale, from a bus stop to a small village, and he continued his experiments right up to his death in 1964. Today his works are to be found in the collection of every serious design museum. 'Rietveld's Universe' is a comprehensive publication on the range of this great designer's work, reproducing works and presenting new research and perspectives, including contributions by leading international scholars. Focusing on Rietveld's spatial philosophy and the mutual influences between his work and that of his close contemporaries such as Mondrian, Van Doesburg, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto, it expresses the unity of Rietveld's modernist pedagogy and affirms the audacity of his vision.

Aggiungi al carrelloDuring the mid-1950s a plan ripened in the mind of Hermen Molendijk, then burgomaster of Amersfoort, a plan for an exposition hall. For the town of Amersfoort was experiencing a growing need for just such a building. The Dutch government had had the architect Rietveld design a pavilion for the Biennale in Venice (1954); he had also designed space for an exhibition in Sonsbeek park in Arnhem (1954). These commissions probably caused Mr Molendijk, who was undoubtedly an admirer of Gerrit Rietveld`s creations, to hit upon the idea of resolving the acute need for exhibition space in Amersfoort - in view of these brilliant results - by having Rietveld design a building for it. He contacted Rietveld in 1956, and the two of them hatched plans. But the rebel forces, those which showed no appreciation of Rietveld`s work, were up in arms at the same time. The initially ambitious design was scaled down, partly for pecuniary reasons. Rietveld nonetheless managed to achieve a superb result. 21,5x21,5 cm. 1 portfolio (14 sheets) + 1 booklet. 14 einseitig bedruckte Kartons, in mehreren Farben gedruckt, Textheft 7 Bl., 3 Abb.
