La storia di Napoli e del popolo napoletano, con i suoi eventi, i suoi luoghi, e i suoi personaggi più o meno noti, si dispiega così davanti agli occhi dei lettori, come una sorta di lanterna magica vivida e colorata, coniugando appunto l'utile della conoscenza, il vero dell'argomento e l'interessante della narrazione.
