Rifiuta il concetto stesso di malattia mentale, di pazzia, e le varie teorie terapeutiche, da quelle arcaiche con le atrocità del letto di contenzione e dell'elettroshock, a quelle innovative spesso basate sull'uso di psicofarmaci. Giannoni è stato uno psichiatra un po' fuori norma, occupandosi del "disagio" che colpisce una buona percentuale delle persone, causato dalle difficoltà che tutti incontriamo nel rapportarci con gli altri, ed ha praticato una specie di psicologia relazionale con la quale è riuscito a risolvere molti casi. Le storie narrate sembrano semplici, perché sono fortemente legate alla vita quotidiana. La scrittura di Giannoni è vicina al linguaggio degli affabulatori, dei contastorie, con la differenza che egli partecipa intensamente alle vicende dei personaggi, a volte facendoci ridere, avendo a modello certe novelle del Boccaccio, altre volte facendoci commuovere profondamente.
