In queste sue memorie relative al periodo 1939-1945 e scaturite dal diario a cui aveva consegnato la propria testimonianza di adolescente, Janina rievoca la sua drammatica esperienza di reclusa nel ghetto di Varsavia, assieme alla madre e alla sorella, dal novembre 1940 al gennaio 1943. Il padre, ufficiale medico dell'esercito polacco, era già scomparso nell'eccidio russo di Katyn, nella primavera del '40, in cui perirono 14.500 prigionieri polacchi. Fortunosamente scampata alle sorti del ghetto, Janina trascorre altri due anni di sofferenza e di clandestinità nella parte «ariana» della città, in fuga da un nascondiglio all'altro, mentre il ghetto viene raso al suolo e Varsavia insorge nell'agosto-settembre del '44 per essere subito dopo riconquistata dai tedeschi. II libro, che termina con l'arrivo dell'Armata rossa, è inframmezzato da brevi trascrizioni dal diario e intreccia, in pagine intense e coinvolgenti, la normalità delle pratiche quotidiane e degli affetti familiari, che pur sopravvivono, con gli orrori della guerra.
