Tinto, Annali tipografici dei Tramezzino, (Venezia & Roma), 1966, p. 46, no. 125. FIRST EDITION, second issue (the first bears the date 1552), dedicated by the author to Francesco Chimenti.?Pietro Lauro presentava la sua raccolta di lettere al dedicatario Francesco Chimenti, 'nobile fiorentino', come una raccolta di ?concetti', frutto di conversazioni: ?Vengo dunque con le mie lettere, ne le quali vostra Signoria leggerà molti bei discorsi e piacevoli ragionamenti e vi sovvenirà di molti similari parlari, che voi et meco ne la casa vostra, e in più altri luochi con diverse persone virtuose havete trattato. Et io tenendone memoria, me ne sono in molte mie lettere servito' ? Prima parte, in: ?Margini. Giornale della dedica e altro?, 3, 2009, p. 28).Lauro published a second volume of letters seven years later, Delle lettere di messer Pietro Lauro. Libro secondo (Venice, 1560), dedicated to Johann Jakob Fugger. All the letters in the collec. Book.

Text in roman and italic type, printed catchwords. Near contemporary limp vellum, manuscript title to flat spine; (few areas of thumbsoiling and flyleaves most affected with some stains and pen cancellations; vellum a bit rubbed, otherwise good copy of this early Venetian printing). Formerly in the collection of The Horticultural Society of New York, their pictorial bookplate on the front flyleaf verso detailing the bequest of Kenneth K. Mackenzie, lawyer and botanist from New York City (October 1934). Rare Italian first edition of three botanical treatises written by Charles Estienne (15041564), translated by Pietro Lauro "from Modena" (ca. 15101568), and printed by Vicenzo Valgrisi in Venice in 1545. Charles Estienne, also known by his Latinized name Carolus Stephanus, was a physician, scholar of agriculture, and the third son of the Parisian printer Henri Estienne. The three works bound together here are Pietro Lauro's Italian translations of Charles Estienne's Seminario, over plantario degli Alberi (Latin: Seminarium sive Plantarium Earum Arborum .), the Vineto di Carlo Stefano nel quale brevement si narrano i nomi latini antichi . (Latin: Vinetum in Quo Varia Vitium. .), and the Le Herbe, fiori, stirpi che si piantano ne gli horti . (Latin: De Re Hortensi Libellus). Charles Estienne's works had been printed in Paris with his family publishers since the mid-1530s; they are revered as Renaissance masterworks full of original observations and botanical terms. Estienne's works were destined for university audiences; it is clear from the date of the binding that these three works have been together for several centuries. Vagrisi's Italian editions of Estienne's works are rarely found alone, so these three bound together as a set is of utmost scarcity.
