La fanciulla del West, to a libretto by Guelfo Civinini and Carlo Zangarini after David Belasco's play The Girl of the Golden West, was first performed in New York at the Metropolitan Opera on 10 December 1910. "Orchestrally [the opera] is Puccini's most ambitious undertaking before Turandot, his forces including quadruple woodwind, two harps and an assortment of percussion, from all of which he distilled a vast range of instrumental colour from the delicate to the barbaric. Though it has never attained the easy popularity of its three predecessors, the opera has always won the respect of musicians." Julian Budden in Grove Music Online.

[ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Unpublished autograph letter signed by Giacomo Puccini to a patron; two pages written in black ink on two leaves. Leaves uniformly shaded, traces of former pasted mounts on verso. A photographic reproduction of the famous composer's portrait is enclosed. Puccini responds to a patron's request to have La Bohème performed at a charity event: "Io non ho niente in contrario che la Bohème venga eseguita per una sera corta a scopo benefico." [I have no problem with La Bohème being performed for a charity event]. "Credo pero che sarebbe bene avere anche la adesione della Casa Ricordi proprietaria dello spartito." [I believe, however, that it would be good to have the authorization of Casa Ricordi [Puccini's publishing house], owner of the score]. Despite the failure of the first performance on February 1, 1896, La Bohème subsequently enjoyed worldwide success, rapidly becoming one of the finest operas in the Romantic repertoire. A fine tribute to the triumph of one of the greatest composers of the late 19th-century.

With a handwritten and signed note. The note is on letterhead 'Torre del Lago, Toscana', and dated September 30, 1911, and reads "My Dear Tonino, I stopped by to say hello to you and the young lady, but nobody was at home. I am leaving for London and Liverpool, and I shall be back in about twelve days. I am having an addition built to my existing cement dock extending out on the lake. I shall have it built with wood, covered by sheet metal, three meters by five. I am telling you this so that you may notify the town authorities. Our friend, Nasone, continues to spoil my hunting expeditions by preceding me with his early morning walks and flushing out whatever game there is. How long can this go on, I ask you? If this continues, I shall wind up asking you to introduce me to the sport of fishing, and I shall make you an offer you cannot refuse. By the way, let me know when Nasone's contract expires. We are all well and I shall write again. Adieu. P. S. Should we buy the little motorboat that Sargentini cut down in size? It would be very useful to me. It could be used instead of the three row boats which I keep on the dock." It is signed Puccini. The letter is addressed to Antonio Bettolacci, a friend and the administrator of the Marchese Ginori, which was across Lake Massaciuccoli. The "young lady" referred to is most likely Maria Bianca Ginori, the daughter of Carlo Ginori. Sargentini was the Ginori family chauffeur and mechanic. The photograph 4 3/4 x 6 3/4". With autograph titling "Tosca" at head and inscribed "Finito l'atto lo a di 4 9embre 1898 G. Puccini" at lower right corner. 13 measures in condensed score from Act I, commencing 4 measures before figure 75. "The passage occurs towards the end of Act I, when Scarpia, in a monologue over a characteristically obsessive pattern of alternating chords, accompanied by bells, organ, drum beast to stimulate cannon fire and growling bassoons, gloats at the prospect of capturing Angelotti and enjoying Toscar's favours. Puccini's note note of the date of completion of Act I indicated that he discarded drafting material at the conclusion of each section of the opera. The opera as a whole was not competed until October 1899 ." Christie's London auction 1 December 2004 catalogue description Worn, browned, and creased; edges frayed and with small tears; some spotting; small ca. 1 cm hole, not affecting music; vertical tear through signature, with no loss. Tosca, to a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa after Victorien Sardou, was first performed in Rome at the Teatro Costanzi on 14 January 1900. "None of Puccini's operas has aroused more hostility than Tosca, by reason of its alleged coarseness and brutality; yet its position in the central repertory has remained unchallenged. Not only is it theatrically gripping from start to finish: it presents the composer's most varied and interesting soprano role, hence its perennial appeal for the great operatic actress. In contrast to Sardou's heroine, against whose ignorance and simplicity the playwright can never resist tilting, Puccini's Tosca is a credible woman of the theatre, lacking neither intelligence nor humour, and capable of genuine dignity." Julian Budden in Grove Music Online "Tosca is still one of the operas most vividly present in the collective imagination. Its vitality is derived above all from Puccini's technical skill. The composer stuck faithfully to his intention to represent a reality, real surroundings and characters, putting the music at the service of the drama. Imaginative tone colour, melodic inventiveness and motivic elaboration have their origin in economy and lead on to still bolder achievements in structure which bring him in line with the developments in European opera of the time. Combining the late 19th-century sensibility of the play by Sardou with modern modes of expression, ardently admired by Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg, though no less passionately deplored by Mahler, Puccini, in the best way possible, ushered in the 20th century." Michele Girardi in Grove Music Online Autograph working manuscripts from Puccini's major operas rarely come on the market.

Dated March 13th, 1903, he discusses a terrible fall he had falling from an automobile in which he broke his leg and is bedridden for two months. He mentions how his work on what he just calls "Butterfly" has been interrupted. He also discusses speaking to Ricordi [Casa Ricordi, Puccini's publishing house] on behalf of the recipient and wishing him good wishes on his approaching marriage. Small red ink to top edge of front page; Half of the original mailing envelope remains, reading "A M[onsier?] Gaston Compositeur de Musique Hanoi Via Marseille - Tonkin" residue along the crease of front page from seal of envelope; JB consignment; shelved case 0. Madama Butterfly, one of Puccini's most well-known works, had an incredibly poor reception when it first premiered in February 1904, due in large part to a late completion by Puccini. When revised by Puccini and performed in May of 1904 it became a success. While the recipient is unknown, given the date they could have traveled for the Exposition de Hanoi, the World's Fair in then French Indochina between November 1902 and February 1903.; 1364801.
