While "High Tide & Green Grass" (1966) had already set a standard for REAL "greatest hits" albums (no covers of "Autumn Leaves:" or "Red Sails in the Sunset") "Hot Rocks" was simply stunning. We never felt "Play With Fire" was their strongest work, but where else is there a weak spot, here? "Time Is On My Side," "Satisfaction," "As Tears Go By," "19th Nervous Breakdown," "Under My Thumb," "Ruby Tuesday," "Let's Spend the Night Together" (a lyric of which Ed Sullivan did not approve. Sex was OK as long as you didn't stay for breakfast?), "Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Street Fighting Man," "Sympathy for the Devil," "Honky Tonk Women" (although both disc label and back of gatefold jacket spell it "Honky Tonk Woman" -- Reparata & The Delrons on backing vocals, by the way); "Midnight Rambler," "You Can't Always Get What You Want," "Brown Sugar," "Wild Horses" . . . all in eight years, and they weren't done, were they? ("Angie" not included because it wasn't released till 1973.) Reduced from $32.
