One of 125 copies (this an unnumbered hors série copy) of a superb illustrated book with colour wood engravings designed by art deco master François-Louis Schmied and engraved by his son Théo, each printed successively from multiple blocks.Author Lucien Désiré Prosper Graux known as Lucien Graux (1878-1944) was a French doctor, entrepreneur, art collector, bibliophile, writer, publisher and member of the French Resistance in his final years (he was arrested and murdered at Dachau in 194). He had amassed one of the finest French book collections of his era and operated a small publishing house, the 'Amis du Docteur Lucien-Graux'. This orientalist fanstasy Le Tapis de Prières was the house's 24th production, the first in quarto. Large 4to (340 × 250 mm), pp. 75, [3] plus 10 full page colour wood engravings (3 of which form elaborate initial letters for the text opposite). Uncut and loose as issued in original plain wrappers with a further wood engraving to the upper cover. 'Instructions to the binder' slip preserved (loosely inserted), orginal linen covered chemise and plain slipcase. Very minor light thumbing to the wrapper and half-title, but a superb copy. He was born in Cairo of Armenian parents and studied in Lebanon before settling in Paris. As a doctor for the French government, he worked throughout Morocco and the Far East. Housed in a complementary yellow marbled paper covered slipcase with tan morocco edges. 10 full-page colour printed plates, large colour engraved cover vignette, and cul-de-lampe to colophon, all engraved on wood by Théo Schmied. Two minute darker brown marks to spine, minimal faint scattered spotting, generally an excellent copy. This is one of the fine series of works produced by French doctor, entrepreneur, collector, bibliophile, writer, publisher and Nazi-resister Dr. Lucien Désiré Prosper Graux (1878-1944), who had created one of the largest and finest private collections of manuscripts and books of his time, housed at his home at 33 avenue Kleber. He also created the small publishing house called "Les Amis du Docteur Lucien-Graux" which produced finely printed livres d'artistes such as this one, typically with limitations of less than 150. François-Louis Schmied is considered one of the most important of the Art Deco artists, particularly in the area of book illustration, design and publishing. An experienced wood engraver, he practised the delicate technique of multiple monochrome overprints in order to obtain colour illustrations.

Au moment de notre lettre, la gravure des illustrations de George Barbier pour Les Vies imaginaires (Marcel Schwob) est toujours en cours. Elle ne prendra fin qu'en 1929. Lettre très intéressante qui nous apprend notamment que Schmied devait graver les dessins de George Barbier pour Les Vies imaginaires (Marcel Schwob) et qu'il avait donc déjà acquis le papier. La bibliothèque de Genève conserve un dossier concernant Schmied et cette illustration (côte D.O. autogr. 1-54) dans laquelle se trouve notamment une liste des « originaux de Barbier remis à Monsieur Schmied, 11 août 1927 ». Les autres courriers en notre possession montrent que Schmied s'est bien occupé de cette illustration. Toutefois, on a retenu que c'était son collaborateur, Pierre Bouchet, qui avait fait les gravures. Peut-être s'agit-il plutôt d'un travail à quatre mains pour lequel Schmied aura laissé apparaître seulement le nom de Bouchet. L'ouvrage fut finalement publié en 1929. Daphné est l'ouvrage d'Alfred de Vigny, daté 1924 mais donc publié en 1925. Il est édité et illustré par Schmied. L'exemplaire de cet ouvrage de Bertaut était d'ailleurs largement truffé et portait une reliure de Cretté avec une laque de Jean Dunand d'après un dessin de Schmied (vente Christie's, 11 décembre 2008, n°149). Très beau courrier. [374].

(9020) Edizione di soli 400 esemplari "sur Hollande", firmati dall'autore, il cui colophon recita: "Achevé d'imprimer par F.-L. Schmied le trente décembre de l'An de Guerre Mil neuf cent dix-huit". E' il secondo libro illustrato da François-Louis Schmied (1873-1941), il celebre illustratore di origine ginevrina, trapiantato poi a Parigi e infine in Marocco, e contiene alcuni racconti di Geneviève Maury ispirati agli anni della guerra (la mobilitazione, le prime vittime, la solidarietà umana nelle campagne). Della stessa autrice Schmied aveva già illustrato nel 1911 Sous la Terre. Anche se opera "minore", il volumetto è frutto integrale del grande illustratore ginevrino: impaginazione, vignette xilografiche e ornamentazione del testo, fino alla scelta della cartonatura e dei fogli di guardia.
