This volume explores three different genres of public speech in the context of the US presidential discourse. Eulogies, commencement addresses, and concession speeches are liminal genres unfolding during moments of passage which are incorporated into larger rituals, thus interplaying with other genres. Despite being ceremonial genres, they hybridize, combining deliberative and epideictic aspects. These genres are explored in terms of their social functions in the context of specific discourse communities and the discursive strategies they employ to achieve their functions. To this end, the volume draws on Critical Discourse Analysis in combination with rhetorical, pragmatic and persuasive frameworks. The volume also reflects on the effects of mediatization on political discourse which has produced personalization, conversationalization and even spectacularization of presidential genres. With their balanced mix between solemn and casual style, these genres illustrate how presidents continue to inspire the nation reinforcing American identity through references to the sacredness of American democracy and values. The book presented here is a revised and updated version of the one which appeared for the first time in Polish in 2009. The author made an ambitious attempt to describe the history of the the viri sacris faciundis college and the use of the Sibylline books in state divinatory practices. He analyzed the role of the Sibyl in its cultural dimension, noting the relatively late appearance of this figure in Roman religion. Fighting against the historiographic myths that have arisen around the college's activity, he convincingly demonstrates its important role in the social and political life of ancient Rome, especially in the process of unifying the Apennine peninsula and shaping the empire. The aim of this volume is to probe the complexities surrounding the idea of "magic" in the early modern period through the specific lens of materials. This collection draws inspiration from a set of papers presented as a double panel, titled "Magical Materials," at the Renaissance Society of America's Virtual Conference in the spring of 2021. The essays address magical materials from an interdisciplinary perspective with topics that draw upon learned and popular forms of philosophy, literature, and art. The authors touch on different geographic and linguistic fields (Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Latin, and the nascent European vernacular languages). By addressing specific examples of magical materials, the essays provide a glimpse into how philosophers, artists, playwrights, and everyday individuals in Europe made sense of the terrestrial/celestial, natural/supernatural, and legendary/real worlds of magic. The studies cross a large diachronic space, from the fourteenth century to the first half of the seventeenth century, revealing the numerous faces of magic in this kaleidoscopic era.
