There aren't any markings or attachments. Terrific looking book. Same with the dust jacket (see first three photographs). Very clean. Almost no wear at all (a little wrinkle at the top of the spine). No tears. It is Not clipped. It will be fitted with a protective cover. 'A book from the Tauber Institute for the Study of European Jewry at Brandeis University'. From the dust jacket front flap (and preface) 'The man whose name appears in the title of this book and in the headings of each of its chapters has determined my life to a degree that embarrasses me. I was 3 1/2 when he came to power and almost 16 when he killed himself. I grew up under him, went to his schools, lived through his war. Only after he had disappeared, though, did I feel his full impact upon me. Among my first postwar readings were reports on his camps and on the Nuremberg trials. I realized that I had lived under a criminal. I began wondering how his rule had been possible and in the country in which I had chanced to be born. It was largely with these questions in mind that I took up the study of history.'.

Aggiungi al carrelloTrade paperback. Condizione: Good. First Printing [Stated]. xxv, [3], 601, [1] pages. Illustrations (Tables, Figures). Notes. Bibliography. Index. Minor cover wear and soiling noted. This is one of The Tauber Institute for the Study of European Jewry series. Renée Poznanski (born 26 April 1949 in Paris) is a French-born Israeli historian, specialist in the Holocaust, and the Jewish Resistance in France during the Second World War. Renée Poznanski is the Yaakov and Poria Avnon Professor of Holocaust Studies in the Department of Politics and Government at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, a department she created and has led for several years. Poznanski's book Jews in France during World War II was awarded the Jacob Buchman Prize for the Memory of the Holocaust. Renée Poznanski presents an extraordinary panorama of Jewish daily life in all of France during World War II. The Jews in France during World War II provides a detailed and nuanced account of Jews in both occupied and Vichy France as well as of Jewish life in French camps. In addition to standard French and German documentation, Poznanski relies on non-published sources (diaries, reports by various organizations, personal correspondence) to build riveting collective portraits of Jewish suffering and survival. Even more than this, she uses these sources to illuminate "the rhythm of French and German persecution, the reactions of Jewish and non-Jewish opinion, and the various strategies of the Jewish victims." A crucial contribution to French Jewish and Holocaust historiography, and an important corrective to much of the literature that treats Jews as victims rather than as subjects able to make (some) choices, The Jews in France during World War II is certain to become the most authoritative work in the field.

"The translation with commentary and the photographs of the hymns to Isis in her temple at Philae, dating to the time of Ptolemy II Philadelphus (284-246 B.C.), are part of my "Studia Philensia," on which I have been working for some years; they are part of my photographic documentation and collation of the texts made during several seasons, especially during the time of the dismantling of the monuments at Philae in 1875-77. They are discussed here in order to place the study of some of the most important and the earliest hymns to Isis in a proper chronological and theological perspective, and to indicate briefly the character of the fundamental ideas of the Isiac theology at Philae." (Author). The study is illustrated with twenty-four full page b/w photographs of the site, including frontispiece, and nine figures depicting the hieroglyphic hymns and a plan of the monuments in the central part of the island Philae. Contains list of plates and figures, abbreviated references at front. Notes, selected bibliography, general index and Egyptian, Greek and Latin indices at rear. Binding with minor wear along edges. Small faint stain on front and two minor blemishes on back cover. Binding in very good, interior in fine condition.
