Aggiungi al carrello2 parts in 1 volume. One of only two editions of Feyerabend's renowned version of the Leuven Vulgate, with splendid woodcut illustrations by Swiss-German artist Jost Amman (1539-1591), one of the leading book illustrators of his time. Although both editions are considered to be among the most beautifully illustrated bibles of the 16th century, the present edition is the most copiously illustrated of the two, as it contains seventy more woodcuts. It is also quite rare on the market, as we have only been able to trace two other copies in sales records of the 21st century.Sigmund Feyerabend (1528-1590), the publisher of the present work, is known for working closely with book illustrators. He was the first publisher to commission a Bible edition that was uniformly illustrated by one artist. His first such publication was a Luther Bible from 1560, which contained circa 150 woodcuts by Virgil Solis (1514-1562), an important and highly prolific book illustrator from Nuremberg. After his death, Feyerabend continued to work with Solis' student, woodcut artist Jost Amman. Although publishers increasingly turned towards the new technique of copper engraving, Amman's work was still sought after for its high quality and minute details. In 1566, he produced 128 beautiful woodcut illustrations for Feyerabend's first edition of the Leuven Vulgate, which was a folio. It became so successful, that it led to a lifelong business partnership between the two men. When Amman was asked for the second edition, which is the present work, he made a completely new set of illustrations, as this second edition was a smaller size. Whereas the illustrations for the first edition were rectangular, the new ones are all set within an elaborate oval frame. They are also more numerous, as Amman created seventy more. These illustrations became so popular, that they were re-used by other publishers for their bibles. The present edition, however, is the first in which this second set of woodcuts appeared.Contemporary or slightly later annotations in Latin on the front and back endpapers, a 17th-century owner's inscription on the title page. The boards are somewhat rubbed and soiled, affecting the clarity of the blind-tooling on the back board. The work is slightly browned throughout, the lower corners of leave 265 and 266 in part 1 are torn, without affecting the text, contemporary and later annotations in the margins of some of the leaves in both brown and red ink, both parts without the final blank leaf. Otherwise in good condition.l BM STC German, p. 87; VD16 B 2637 (8 copies in German libraries); cf. Thieme/Becker I, pp. 410-413; not in Darlow & Moule; USTC. Contemporary richly blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, sewn on 4 supports with the corresponding raised bands on the spine, with the initials "WFL" and the year "1578" blind-tooled on the front board, and with two engraved metal clasps. With 198 woodcut illustrations in the text, a woodcut printer's device on the final page, the titles of both parts are set within an elaborate woodcut border. Pages: [16], 423; 311 ll.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. ILLUSTRATED WITH OVER 600 WOODCUTS BIBLIA, ad vetustissima exemplaria nunc recens castigata, in quibus praeter ea quae subsequens praefatio indicat, capita singula ita versibus distincta sunt ut numeri praefixi lectorem non remorentur et loca quaesita tamquam digito demonstrent. Edited by Johannes Hentenius. Title page illustrated with an elaborate architectural woodcut border incorporating several scenes: St. Jerome in his study, Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac, and Cain slaying Abel; plus over 600 text woodcuts after Hans Holbein, Bernard Salomon and Pierre Eskrich. Thick 4to. Bound in 16th- or 17th-century full vellum over semi-rigid boards; spine titled "Biblia Sacra" in an early hand. Printed in Venice [by Altobello Salicato] for heirs of Niccolò Bevilacqua & assoc., 1574. The Latin text of this Venetian edition is of Hentenius' influential 1547 Louvain Bible, which closely follows the Estienne Bible of 1538-40, with some modifications of the text and marginal matter. "The artist of these illustrations worked from various sources, notably the three sets of woodcuts by Hans Holbein, Bernard Salomon, and Pierre Eskrich, introduced at Lyons from 1538 to 1562 and widely used in Bibles and picture books [.]. This Venetian set also has scenes not usually illustrated." (Mortimer/Harvard, Italian Books, No. 62, describing a 1576 ed. with the same woodcuts). The Vulgate Bible is an early 5th century Latin version of the Holy Scriptures, translated from the Hebrew and Aramaic by St. Jerome between 382 and 405 A.D., on the orders of Pope Damasus I. It takes its name from the phrase versio vulgata, "the translation made public." and was written in a common fourth-century style of literary Latin in conscious distinction from the more elegant Ciceronian Latin. The Vulgate improved upon several translations then in use, and became the definitive and officially promulgated Bible version of the Roman Catholic Church. Its Old Testament is the first Latin version translated directly from the Hebrew Tanakh rather than from the Greek Septuagint. In terms of its importance to the culture, art, and life of the Middle Ages, the Vulgate stands supreme. Preliminaries include Lenten's preface to the 1547 Louvain Bible, St Jerome's prologues, Index testimoniorum a Christo et apostolis in Nouo Testamento, Ordo librorum, and another preface by Francesco Antonio Faccini. At the end of the Bible are Interpretation of the Hebrew, Chaldaic and Greek names, Index of Subjects and Sentences, Index of Epistles and Gospels, as well as Proprium Sanctorum and Commune Sanctorum. Binding slightly rubbed and soiled, with light wear to extremities, minor tears at joints. Title-page somewhat soiled with chipping around edges, neatly backed on its blank verso with old paper at an early date (minor loss to top outer corner of the woodcut border). Some scattered soiling; occasional light water-staining; a small stain to bottom outer corners of several leaves. A short, thin worm-track to inner margin of a few leaves at the end. 2 leaves with minor repairs to inner margin affecting just a few letters, woodcuts not affected. 2 early ownership inscriptions to title-page, and a later ownership name to front pastedown. Some tearing to pastedowns due to lifting vellum turn-ins. In all, a clean, well-preserved example of this scarce, sumptuously illustrated Vulgate Bible.

Title page with elaborate wood-engraved frame, text profusely illustrated WITH 600 WOOD ENGRAVINGS depicting scenes from scripture, after Holbein, Bernard Salomon (le Petit Bernard), and others (a handful of these a bit indistinct). Front pastedown with ex-libris of Leonis S. Olschki. Adams B-1093; STC Italian 93. Not in Darlow & Moule. âA little wear to joints and extremities, spine a bit crackled, separation at hinges (but no looseness), occasional minor browning or foxing, otherwise in remarkably fine condition, the text clean and crisp, and in a still-lustrous, entirely solid, unsophisticated original binding. This is a very well-preserved, handsomely bound, and lavishly illustrated edition, with distinguished provenance, of the Louvain Bible, first printed in Venice in 1578. Our edition contains 600 wood engravings illustrating the text, ranging from portraits of prophets, saints, and evangelists to dramatic scenes from the histories of the Old Testament and the life of Christ, and ending with an imaginative Apocalypse cycle. Many of these are the work of Lyonnaise artist Bernard Salomon (1506-61), known by the sobriquet "Le Petit Bernard" for his small engravings rich with detail. Others are based on the biblical woodcuts of Hans Holbein. The binding here is likely French; the flat spine with just one large gilt-framed panel and the olive branch decoration on the covers is characteristic of late 16th century and early 17th century French work. The exceptional condition here is typical of books from the collection of Leo Samuel Olschki (1861-1940), scion of a family of Prussian Jewish printers, whose interest in printing history led to his becoming a celebrated antiquarian bookseller, author, founder of the journal "The Bibliophile," and publisher of works in the humanities.

Aggiungi al carrello32,5 x 23 cm. (8),602,(63) Blatt mit 125 halbseitigen Holzschnitten von Jost Amman. Pergamentbd. d. Zeit. - Becker, Amman S. 10. - Hollstein, I, S. 37.
