Solida legatura del tempo in piena pergamena semi-floscia. Frontespizio inquadrato entro elegante cornice architettonica incisa in xilografia. Una tavola più volte ripiegata con un' iscrizione latina fra le pp. 178-179. Testatine e capilettera sontuosamente istoriati impressi in xilografia, numerose xilografie intercalate n.t., di anonimo, ma attribuite a Bernard Salomon basate sull' edizione di Giocondo del 1511 e sull' edizione di Como del 1521. Un ritratto del Philander in xilografia alla c. [b]4(v). Grande marca tipografica al recto della carta Qq4(r). Illustrazioni e diagrammi xilografici in tutto il testo. Carattere romano e corsivo. Qualche glossa marginale di mano coeva. Ampio indice in tre colonne finale. Qualche fisiologica arrossatura dovuta al tipo di carta, peraltro esemplare ad ampi margini in stato di conservazione molto buono. Magnifica edizione cinquecentesca figurata di Vitruvio curata dall' architetto francese Guillaume Philander, celebre umanista amico di Rabelais, che l' arricchì di correzioni e annotazioni. Per la cura di questa edizione, il Philander si avvalse di una copiosa documentazione, tra cui le fonti manoscritte fornitegli direttamente dal Serlio, di cui egli era stato allievo. Questa edizione include anche il "De mensuris et ponderisbus" di Agricola, l'interessante "De staticis experimentis dialogus" del cardinale Niccolò Cusano e il trattato di Frontino sull' approvvigionamento idrico di Roma. "The contribution of Philander and of the Accademia delle Virtu to mid-sixteenth-century architectural theory is of the greatest importance.Philander's notes would be cited almost without exception by every Vitruvius commentator and translator, from the date of its first appearance until the nineteenth cenntury" (Wiebenson, Millard Coll., vol. 1, pp.471ff.). Unico trattato organico in tale materia pervenutoci dall'antichità classica, il "De Architectura" fu steso attorno al 27 d.C., e riassume tutte le procedure edificatorie e gli stili della Roma del tempo. Dopo un lungo inabissarsi della sua fortuna, esso assunse importanza assolutamente eccezionale nel Rinascimento ad opera di architetti sommi come l'Alberti, che ad esso si riallacciarono, e dei trattatisti di estetica cinquecenteschi, fortuna che si perpetuò ancora nei secoli seguenti, in cui il testo vitruviano assurse a posizione di assoluta normatività, finendo per incarnare sovente i canoni stessi dell'arte architettonica.
