August 1804 in Svaneke, Bornholm; 12. Dezember 1886 in Kopenhagen) war ein dänischer klassischer Philologe und Politiker. Madvig studierte an der Universität Kopenhagen, u. a. bei Frederik Christian Sibbern (17851872) und Frederik Christian Petersen (17861859). Ab 1826 war er vertretungsweise Dozent. Er galt bereits jetzt als großes Ausnahmetalent. Sofort nach seiner Promotion in Klassischer Philologie 1828 erhielt er ein Lektorat. Von 1829 bis 1879 war er Professor. Madvig entwickelte sich zu einem klassischen Sprachgelehrten von europäischem Format, vor allem auf dem Gebiet der Textkritik. Als hervorragender Kenner der lateinischen und griechischen Sprache, insbesondere der Werke von Cicero und Livius, galt er vielen Zeitgenossen als Inbegriff des Gelehrten: In Sųren Kierkegaards Polemiken finden sich mehrfach Verweise auf Madvig. Zwischen 1855 und 1879 wurde er fünfmal zum Rektor der Universität Kopenhagen gewählt. Von 1867 bis zu seinem Tode 1886 war Madvig Präsident der Dänischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Madvig war Vertreter eines moderaten Neuhumanismus: Der Kanon klassisch neuhumanistischer Bildung sollte seiner Ansicht nach mit modernen Sprachen und Naturwissenschaften erweitert werden. Die humanistische Allgemeinbildung besaß für ihn einen höheren Stellenwert als eine rein berufsbezogene Ausbildung. Bezüglich ihrer Ziele stand Madvig den deutschen Neuhumanisten sehr nahe (vgl. Johann Gottfried Herder, Friedrich Immanuel Niethammer, Wilhelm von Humboldt und Johann Friedrich Herbart).
