A scarce early 16th century edition of Ovid's de Arte Amandi, also known as the Ars Amatoria, or the Art of Loving and the Remedy of Love, featuring the commentary of Bartholomaeus Merula. an instructional elegy series in three books, the first book of the Ars amatoria was written to show a man how to find a woman. The second book shows how to keep her. The third and final book, written two years after the first books were published, gives women advice on how to win and keep the love of a man. There are five in-text woodcuts, at the beginning of each book. Additionally bound is an early 16th century edition of Ovid's Amorum Libri Tres, containing Medicamina Faciei Femineae, a didactic poem that defends the use of cosmetics by Roman women and provides five recipes for facial treatments. There is also the poem Nux, as well as Pulex and Philomela, though the latter is falsely attributed to him. There are three in-text woodcuts, and numerous woodcut initials. The blank to the first work is lacking, the second work is lacking all 6 preliminary leaves (including the title) and the blank at the end. USTC records 13 copies of the first work in existing libraries Two works bound into one vellum volume in folio, LIII, 89 leaves This volume is in fair shape, with minor rubbing and old staining to the binding. There is some worming to the upper margins of the first work, with a bit of text loss to the page headers. Leaves 2-10 of the second work have old restoration work, the first two more extensively, due to old staining. Several lines of text are obscured. There is minor worming affecting the upper right margin of leaf 72 onwards, with some text loss to the printed marginalia. There is some staining throughout.

(27 by 20 cm.) 282, [5] pp. The outstanding aspects of this edition and copy in which Ovid's verse is rendered in both Latin and German translation are magnificent decorative pigskin binding, the flowing type, and the elegant page decoration, which includes a huge variety of cameo images. These images are never repeated exactly, it should also be noted. Resulting is a book of extraordinary beauty, both exterior and interior-wise. Aesthetically the book production is true to the classical in its lines and sensibility while being securely of its own time when a sinuous Art Nouveau or Jugendstil was ripening into a modernist economy, or Art Deco. There are sensuous Rococo details, such as the gilt lines etched into the spine, while one can not but be impressed with the lack of clutter on each and every page! While the type is not a plain Roman or the like, the gentle curvature of the cursive invites and soothes the eye, and every word should be crisply clear to the modern reader. Light soiling and darkening on the spine. Clean and tight within. The slipcase has some wear. Full Pigskin (Full Leather), with custom slipcase.
