El 1933 va haver d'exiliar-se a França i l'any 1940 als Estats Units. En acabar la guerra va tornar a Alemanya i va morir a Emmendingen l'any 1957. Aquest llibre va rebre el premi Crítica Serra d'Or de traducció l'any 1988.
