Second edition of the Italian translation of the Protestant Bible by Giovanni Diodati, entirely revised and greatly enlarged after the 1st edition of 1607. In this version the apocrypha are placed after the New Testament, while at the end there is a rhyming version of the Psalms. If the first edition had not gone unnoticed by the Church, the second of 1641 raised even greater concerns. Cardinal Antonio Barberini, brother of Pope Urban VIII, wrote to the inquisitor of Florence in these terms: "The preaching ministers of the City of Geneva are constantly meditating to spread in Italy scriptures full of poison of their perfidious heresies and insidiously seek to interweave among the versions of the sacred writing, trying to fool with their pretended clean style and with the ease of the version the simple people, and perhaps also those who are learned. In the past years we saw an Italian version of the sacred writing composed by the Diodati, the main minister in Geneva, with some notes full of false and heretical opinions and soon gave the necessary orders to make it to be considered as prohibited for the rules of the Index". Based on the previous versions of Erasmus of Brucioli and Massimo Teofilo, the Diodati bible - which from the stylistic point of view is considered one of the masterpieces of the Italian language of the seventeenth century - remained in force in the Waldensian Church until 1924.
