Prima edizione (e unica edizione apparsa vivente il Tassoni) di uno dei più interessanti documenti dell'esegesi petrarchesca di età barocca. Il Tassoni stese il presente commento nel 1602 nel corso di un suo viaggio in Spagna, riprendendolo e ampliandolo in seguito, al punto che di esso esistono ben 4 diverse redazioni. Il critico acuto e sagace vi appare qua e là, ora nell'esegesi di passi oscuri, ora in osservazioni di cui faran tesoro i commentatori successivi, ora nella protesta contro l'accusa di plagio fatta al Petrarca, protesta che egli appoggia sui documenti, mostrando una non comune conoscenza dei poeti toscani e provenzali. Tuttavia, più che come lavoro filologico, l'opera del Tassoni è interessante come una caratteristica manifestazione del suo spirito bizzarro. Qui ci soffermano le allusioni alla sua vita privata, là le frecciate contro l'Accademia della Crusca. Per il Petrarca egli professa una ammirazione grande. ma si sdegna contro i petrarchisti zucche secche, cervelli di formica (Elena Ceva Valla in Dizionario Bompiani delle Opere, II, p. 391). Amplissime furono le polemiche suscitate dal commento tassoniano, principalmente ad opera di Giuseppe degli Aromatari d'Assisi (Assisi, 1587-1660), letterato, allievo di Girolamo Fabrici d'Acquapendente, medico a Venezia per un cinquantennio, autore di rinomate opere scientifiche. Egli iniziò le sue lunghe polemiche col Tassoni, istigato, pare, da Cesare Cremonino e Paolo Beni, con le Risposte del 1611, intese a fornire una sistematica confutazione (pur tra travisamenti lampanti) delle annotazioni del Tassoni, che dapprima replicò con gli Avvertimenti di Crescenzio Pepe di Susa (1611) e poi, nel 1613, con la Tenda Rossa, che chiuse la polemica, rispondendo a sua volta alla controreplica dei Dialoghi di Falcidio Melampodio.
