Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: fair to vg-. First edition. Quarto. [6] 87pp. Period calf-backed mottled paper boards. Spine with gilt lettering, ruling and tooling. Edges of book block in red-orange. Green ribbon marker. Title page with decorative floral borders, as well as a number of large initials and decorative headpieces, tailpieces and borders throughout the text. Title page and the final page contain biblical quotes printed in Syriac, accompanied by their Latin translations. In this work by noted Italian Christian Hebraist scholar Giovanni Bernardo De Rossi, the author defends his previous 1773 work "Della vana Aspettazione Degli Ebrei del Loro Re Messia dal Compimento di Tutte le Epoche" (On the Vain Expectation of the Jews of Their King Messiah from the Fulfillment of All Ages) against the 1774 critique of that work written by Azaria Natani. According to modern scholarship, the 1774 critique credited to "Azaria Natani" (with addition observations by a theologian "N.N.") was actually written by Dominican scholars Giuseppe Masi and Luigi Ceruti, under pseudonym. In De Rossi's work of 1773 he chastised the state of Christian scholarship on Jewish subjects by his contemporaries for their general lack of knowledge of Hebrew language and understanding of Jewish ideas and biblical commentary. The 1774 response by the afformentioned Dominicans does not actually address the main accusations of De Rossi's original work, but instead shifts the focus to a criticism of De Rossi's giving of excessive credit and deference to Rabbinic opinion in his scholarship. It is interesting or ironic to note that in their writing the Dominicans publish under a pseudonym which makes it sounds like their writing is coming from a Jewish author, which may have been perhaps an attempt to subtly affirm their credentials or the validity of their perspective. This publication is comprised of a preface by De Rossi, followed by a complete reprinting of the text of the critique credited to Natani, and finally and most significantly, De Rossi's reply to the critique. Text in Italian, with scholarly footnotes throughout. Binding with heavy rubbing to the hinges of the spine. A few section of the spine have been torn, mostly at the head and tail, with most of the gilt stamped label still present. Covers clean, save for a few small scratches. Interior with some light worming along the very bottom of the book block from the interior front cover through the first page of the preface, with no loss of text. A few sporadic stains of light foxing, mostly confined to the margins, with most text and pages being quite clean overall. Book block still holding relatively tightly. Binding in fair, interior in very good- condition overall. Binding protected and secured in modern mylar. Alternate author name: Gian Bernardo de Rossi Giovanni Bernardo De Rossi (1741-1831) was Christian Hebraist scholar and teacher. After being educated in Ivrea and Turin, he was appointed professor of Oriental languages at the University of Parma in 1769, where he taught for the rest career. He is known for the extensive study of typographical, bibliographical, and textual-critical aspects of biblical scripture, and for his exhaustive collection and recording of variant of the text of the Hebrew bible. His work relating to these efforts "Variæ Lectiones Veteris Testamenti" (Parma, 178488. Supplement 'Scholia Critica', 1798), is still acclaimed. Bibliographic reference: Catastini, Alessandro.
