Marcazzi, including frontis, portraits, unnumbered plates, map of Hell and the folding genealogy. Volume I with a small tear in the margin of ccxxvi-ii. Volume II mispaginated at xxi as xx, light stain to plate iv, and very small loss to the bottom corner of cccxliii. Volume III with light spotting to page introducing Canto I, with light foxing at the end. Volume IV mispaginated at p.50 as 80-81 for 50-51, and again at pgs. 54-55. Volume IV-part II with light staining at the prelims and mispaginated at xiii as 277. Bound in full calf leather, with diamond or diced pattern stamped boards, thick gilt border to front board and rear, sun motif devices in gilt to spine compartments and Dante stamped in gilt right on the leather on one compartment and the volume number on another. Marbled endpapers and text block edges, and engraved bookplate of Lord Lilford [with] Anti Room, Lilford label below. Each volume very clean throughout. The boards of volume II and IV have been recently re-attached and some areas lightly touched-up. With light wear to the leather at the edges of each, with scuffing and scarring to the spines and chipping to the spine of volume V. Overall a good and very clean set with minimal spotting throughout. An important collected edition of Dante's works that had a very strong subscriber base and is accompanied by commentary of some of the best Dante scholars of the time. The Zatta edition also featured new engravings for The Divine Comedy since the late sixteenth century. The first three volumes comprise The Divine Comedy, the last volume in two parts collects; Vita Nuova, Convito, Volgare Eloquenza, Sette Salmi Penitenziali and De Monarchia.

He has been called the father of the Italian language and is one of the most admired and influential poets ever. His book, The Divina Commedia, is a masterpiece of world literature and is considered by many to be the greatest poem of the Middle Ages. The Divina Commedia describes Dante's journey through Hell (Inferno), Purgatory (Purgatorio) and Paradise (Paradiso). The work was translated into many European languages well before it was translated into English. The lack of English translations was due in part to Dante's Catholic views thought to be of little interest to Protestant English audiences. The first complete translation of the Divina Commedia, this set, was first published in 1802. The translator was the Rev. Henry Boyd. Boyd was most likely educated at Trinity College, Dublin. At the time the book was published, the Rev. Boyd was the vicar of Rathfryland, County Down, Northern Ireland. He was also chaplain to the Right Honourable Charles William, Lord Viscount Charleville, to whom this work was dedicated. The books are bound in contemporary mottled leather that has started to flake. The front cover hinges show some cracking at the bottom but are still very sound. The books are nice and square and are very solidly bound and unrestored. The lower book label on the spine of volume III is missing. It would read "Vol. III" on two lines. Marbled endpapers with two previous owners bookplates. The volumes are collated 100% correct. The page sizes are 208 x 128mm. Vol I frontispiece portrait of Dante, title page, dedication iii to vi + 408 pp; Vol II half title, title page + 384pp; Vol III half title, title page + 420pp. There are very minor traces of damp staining and foxing here and there. Overall a very sound and attractive copy of a truly rare seminal work in world literature.

Davies, in the Strand (London), 1802. Complete in 3 volumes with engraved frontispiece of Dante. This set is attractively bound in contemporary mottled calf-leather boards. The spine of each volume is divided into compartments by double gilt decorative rolls and black leather title and volume labels, along with tooled gilt ornaments, gilded board edges, and plain end-papers. Very good condition; minor damages of leather boards, scuffing of edges and bumped corners; all 6 boards remain securely bound and attached, with tenderness, cracking of board joints, and slight separations appearing only at the bottom corners of the front board of Inferno and the back-board of Purgatorio; mottled calf-leather, with minor scratches and gouging, as well as chipping at the top and bottom of the spine ends; internally the books are all excellent, clean and unmarked, without any damages or foxing, and all of the pages securely bound and intact. An attractive and well-preserved copy of the 1st English edition of all three volumes of Dante's timeless epic poem. Henry Boyd's complete translation was issued in 1802, almost five centuries after the 14th-century Italian original. Boyd provided the very first full translation of La Commedia into English, translating Dante's work into rhymed 6-line stanzas. Prior to 1802, there was little attention in the English-speaking Protestant world to Alighieri's work, given its deeply Catholic nature. Today, however, the Divine Comedy has been translated into English more times than it has into any other language, and new English translations continue to be published regularly. Half-Leather. Condizione: Good. T Stothard (illustratore). 1st Edition. A good to very good copy of the first translation into English of Dante's Divine Comedy. This copy retains the original marbled boards, with new calf spines and corners, so the bindings are clean, sound and tight with some light scuffing to the boards. The translation was completed by Henry Boyd, then Vicar of Rathfryland in County Down. The contents are complete with frontispiece portrait by Stothard and titles and half titles to each volume. Vol I: frontispiece; title; dedication; half title to Inferno; text 408pp. Vol II: title; half title; preliminary essay and text 384pp. Vol III: title; half title; preliminary essay and text with index, errata and addenda 420pp (more detailed collation available on request). All the volumes retain their original endpapers with repair at the joints and stamped ownership details of Richd Hopkins of Huntingdonshire. All the endpapers have some marking and Vol II has lost the corner tip of the rear free endpaper. Contents overall are clean with some browning and spotting at times, particularly noticeable at the beginning of Vol II where there tends to be mottling in the top outer corner and the paper is a little fragile there, and brown toning to later leaves. Vol I has a brown mark in top margin of pp 156/7, possibly from an old page marker. Vol III has professional paper repair to the bottom corner of p 229. The engravings and plates were made in Paris under the direction of Master Raymond Jacquet, on Rives paper. The bindings was carried out by Legatoria Torriani in Milan. April MCMLXIV. Konstantinos Mousouros, also known as Kostaki Musurus Pasha, was an Ottoman Greek diplomatic official of the Ottoman Empire who served as ambassador to Greece, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He was born in 1807 in Constantinople (Istanbul) to a distinguished Phanariote family. His brother, Pavlos Mousouros, also became a diplomat. Mousouros became the first ambassador of the Ottoman Empire to the newly independent Kingdom of Greece in 1840, a position he kept until 1848. In 1847-48 he was a central figure in the events known as Mousourika (??????????), which led to his temporary recall and the breakdown of relations between the two states. On his return to Athens he survived an assassination attempt, leading to his transfer to Vienna. In 1850 he took up the post of Ottoman ambassador to the Great Britain and Ireland, which he kept for 35 consecutive years, until his retirement in 1885. During the same period, he also served as ambassador to the Netherlands (1861-77) and Belgium (1861-75). In 1876-78, he was ex officio a member of the short-lived Senate of the Ottoman Empire. Well educated, in 1883 Mousouros translated Dante's Divine Comedy into ancient Greek. He was married and had a son, Stephanos Mousouros, who later became Prince of Samos. (Wikipedia). One of the most important occupations of Musurus Pasha in the last years was the translation of Dante's Divine Comedy from Italian to Greek. Being able to translate a work of Italian classics and masterpieces of western literature should be an indication of Musurus Pasha's performance and intellectual dimension. Due to negative statements about Muhammad and Ali in Dante's work, the book was not allowed to be published within the Ottoman Imperial borders. Folio; bright orange stained vellum, double gilt ruled, gilt centrepiece with fleurons encircling a 'D' to both boards, very light spotting to covers, gilt lettering and ornament to spine; edges untrimmed, light foxing to endpapers, internally clean and crisp copy. Limited print run number 420 0f 1475 copies printed on Van Gelder paper; includes 42 illustrations reproduced by Daniel Jacomet after the drawings by Sandro Botticelli, in sepia collotype. A stunningly bound and beautifully fine exemplar of La Divina Commedia, a limited edition copy by the Nonesuch Press. This was their largest and most intricate volume published to date, of which 1,475 copies were printed. However, its production was plagued by misfortune, when the handmade paper from Italy that had been ordered was so defective that it was unusable, and the stained orange calfskin that was used for the binding, which naturally shrinks and extends in reaction to changes in temperature and humidity, made the boards warp. "The Francis Meynell, one of the founders of the Press, wrote that 'it has been a book more full of anxieties than any I have ever tackled'. Nevertheless, the book became an unprecedented success for the Nonesuch Press and was the most oversubscribed of all their publications. Reviewers wrote "I am sure this book has caused more comment amongst the people interested in books of fine typography than any other book that has come into the United States in years. Everybody is crazy to see the book", and another who hoped that the book would not be purchased by "those perverse bibliophiles who thwart the holy intention of books by locking them uncut upon their jealous shelves" (Dreyfus, p. 46). The Nonesuch Press was a private press founded in 1922 in London by Francis Meynell (1891-1975), his second wife Vera Mendel, and their mutual friend David Garnett (1892-1981). Their aim was to produce high-quality and beautiful volumes printed by commercial printers, making their works available to a wider audience at lower prices. The volume presents a side-by-side narrative with Dante's Italian text was edited by Mario Casella of the University of Florence, after corrections to its first version from 1925, while the English version was made by H.F. Cary, first published in 1814. The italic type and the use of roman capitals to mark the start of each line was inspired by the page design of Venetian books from the early sixteenth century. The choice of double column italic text was intentional not only on its aesthetic part, as a poetical and ornamental suggestiveness, but also as a way to make the reader slow down and savour each word of Dante's opus.

Notes: Period hand-painted vellum bindings are rare and highly collectable. The binding decorations are probably the work of the Giannini family workshop in Florence. It is likely executed by Giulio Giannini (1853-1931), though similar work was carried out by his son Guido (1877-1956) and grandson Giulio Junior (1901-1992).

Il 2° vol. comprende il "Rimario, ch'è quello di Carlo Noci, già pubblicato in Napoli nel 1602, ma con notabili miglioramenti"; ed un "Indice delle desinenze delle Rime". Il 3° vol. contiene: "gli Argomenti; le Allegorie sopra ogni canto del poema e tre Indici che spiegano tutte le cose difficili e di erudizione, i quali tengono le veci di Comento, e furono compilati dai fratelli Volpi". Gli Accademici della Crusca giudicarono la presente edizione "molto più di quella del Manzani emendata e corretta. Konstantinos Mousouros, also known as Kostaki Musurus Pasha, was an Ottoman Greek diplomatic official of the Ottoman Empire who served as ambassador to Greece, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He was born in 1807 in Constantinople (Istanbul) to a distinguished Phanariote family. His brother, Pavlos Mousouros, also became a diplomat. Mousouros became the first ambassador of the Ottoman Empire to the newly independent Kingdom of Greece in 1840, a position he kept until 1848. In 1847-48 he was a central figure in the events known as Mousourika (??????????), which led to his temporary recall and the breakdown of relations between the two states. On his return to Athens he survived an assassination attempt, leading to his transfer to Vienna. In 1850 he took up the post of Ottoman ambassador to the Great Britain and Ireland, which he kept for 35 consecutive years, until his retirement in 1885. During the same period, he also served as ambassador to the Netherlands (1861-77) and Belgium (1861-75). In 1876-78, he was ex officio a member of the short-lived Senate of the Ottoman Empire. Well educated, in 1883 Mousouros translated Dante's Divine Comedy into ancient Greek. He was married and had a son, Stephanos Mousouros, who later became Prince of Samos. (Wikipedia). He is known as the first translator of Dante's Divine Comedy into modern Greek. Musurus Pasha had an intellectual identity. One of the most important occupations of Musurus Pasha in the last years was the translation of Dante's Divine Comedy from Italian to Greek. Being able to translate a work of Italian classics and masterpieces of western literature should be an indication of Musurus Pasha's performance and intellectual dimension. Due to negative statements about Muhammad and Ali in Dante's work, the book was not allowed to be published within the Ottoman Imperial borders. It's signed and inscribed by Musurus Pasha with a dedication in French to Monseigneur Auguste Bonetti as "A la grandeur Monseigneur Bonetti, Hommage de veneration, Musurus".
