Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. BOERHAAVE, HERMANN (1668-1738). Elementa chemiae. Leiden: Isaac Severin, 1732. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes. 4 to. Contemp. Dutch vellum over boards with orig. manuscripts titles on spines. (16), 896, (40); (4), 538, (46) pp. The bifolium 'Conspectus Seriei Chemicarum' & 'Operationum ad Leges Disciplinae' which refer to vol. 2 is bound after the title in vol. 1 as is often the case. Both half-titles present, leaves 187/188 & 207/208 in vol. 1 are cancels, engraved vignettes on titles + 17 folding engraved plates, each with integral letterpress text. Verso of title in vol. 1 with BOERHAAVE'S AUTOGRAPH AUTHENTICATING SIGNATURE. The COPY of "one of America's earliest physical chemists" Gustavius Hinrichs (1836-1923) with his bookplate in each volume. Before Mendeleev, Hinrichs published a spiral form of what was essentially similar to Mendeleev's periodic table of the elements. See: 'Amer. chemists & chem. eng.', vol. 2, pp. 137-139; E.R. Scerri, 'The periodic table' (2007), pp. 86-92; as well as item no. 84(16) of this catalogue. The usual soiling to the vellum; a very good set. "Boerhaave was professor of medicine and botany from 1709, and of chemistry from 1718 at the university at Leyden. He was the most distinguished teacher of his time. One of his most important works is the treatise on chemistry, which was based on notes of his lectures, but was afterwards revised by himself." (Ferguson). "Boerhaave's 'Elementa Chemiae' at once became the standard textbook of chemistry, a position which it held until the end of the era of phlogiston. .Chemical historians have united in paying homage to Boerhaave's treatise. Kopp. wrote that 'if ever a text-book of chemistry contributed to spreading a knowledge of the subject, raising its status, and enlarging its scope, that book was Boerhaave's'. .The modern student of historical chemistry may thus use the 'Elementa Chemiae' as a window enabling him to take a backward look into eighteenth century chemistry, using the eyes of an informed and reflective observer of that day." (John Read, 'Humour and humanism in chemistry', 1947, with reproduction of the title and the autograph signature). The book is divided into two parts, the first dealing with theoretical chemistry having a Newtonian emphasis, the second with practical chemistry. Also included is an early history of chemistry. Because of the importance of Boerhaave's lectures, many manuscript copies were made and two unauthorized published editions (1724 and 1727) appeared. These convinced Boerhaave to issue the genuine edition of his chemical textbook in 1732. Partington II. 743-744. Neville I. 168. Ferguson I. 112. Duveen, p.84. Bolton I. 322. Cole 164.

He is regarded as the founder of clinical teaching and of the modern academic hospital. His main achievement was to demonstrate the relation of symptoms to lesions. Translated from the Latin of Boerhaave, Shaws Chemistry is one of the most comprehensive guides of its time in the art and practice of chemistry. While Volume 1 deals with the history of chemistry, Volume 2 maintains a focus on the contemporary practice of chemistry, containing an appendix, as well as a series of detailed engravings demonstrating various key concepts. A well-restored volume, complete and in very good condition, Volume 2 of Shaws chemistry serves well as a completion to the set, or a stand-alone volume. A fine addition to the library of any scholar in the field of science. Please feel free to view our photographs of this gorgeous volume. Ships daily.

Garrison and Morton (73): "His greatest work was Elementa chemiae, published at Leiden, 1732"; Duveen (p. 84).

Contemporary calf (rebacked). Front board of volume one is loose. Provenance: John E. Parker (ownership inscription, dated 1879, on front free endpaper). "Vol. I begins with a brief history of chemistry, including an account of chemistry, including an account of the principal authors. The remainder of the volume treats the theory, beginning with the chief substances: mineral, vegetable and animal. Under mineral (fossil) substances metals, salts, sulphurs, stones and semi-metals are discussed. Instruments, the bodies by which changes are effected, are the treated in detail. The instruments include fire, air, water, earth, menstruums and chemical utensils. Vol. II contains the practice in which the operations are demonstrated. The volume contains some 227 experiments which were demonstrated during the lectures. The book was important and popular, as shown as by the numerous editions and translations. It supplied a clear, complete and orderly treatment of the best of chemistry at the time, contributing to its establishment as an independent science" (Cole zur Ausg.
