Nelle edizioni che seguirono a quella prima di cui si conoscono anche i nomi degli scenografi: Gayl e Nesslthaler Il Flauto Magico non sfuggì alla tradizione del melodramma che sacrificava l'interpretazione scenica, e talora anche il testo, al pur fondamentale fenomeno musicale, in antitesi con quegli schemi teatrali obsoleti, incapaci ormai di risvegliare nel pubblico un interesse che andasse oltre a un composto ascolto della musica mozartiana, nacque l'edizione salisburghese del '74, curata da Giorgio Strehler che si propose di recuperare il libretto del Flauto, rivalutandone la trama di indiscusso valore drammatico.
