Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Third edition, corrected. Third edition in English of Palladio's influential architectural treatise, translation by Giacomo Leoni. While the binding is well used, the plates are in good condition. The two editions form ''a turning point in the history of British Palladianism,'' marking not only the first complete English translation of I Quattro Libri but the first use of ''worthwhile engraved copies of the original woodcuts'' (RIBA). While portions of the original Italian text had been translated into English during the 17th century, the first edition in English in 1715 sparked a Palladian architectural revival in Great Britain and its American colonies. Fowler 224; Berlin Kat. 2598; ESTC T22366; RIBA 2392. Folio. 4 parts in 2 volumes bound in one. Engraved frontispiece, engraved portrait of Palladio, 213 (of 215, lacking plates #24 and 94) copper-engraved plates by Bernard Picart, Michael Vandergucht, John Harris and others, 15 are double-page. 3/4 calf and hard boards, rubbed. Binding cracked and holding.

Aggiungi al carrelloRare second English edition of Leoni's English translation of Palladio's monumental work, containing new typesetting, but reusing the same plates from the first edition. Folio, two volumes bound in full contemporary polished calf with gilt titles and ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, double gilt ruling and decorative stamping to the front and rear panels, engraved frontispiece portrait of Palladio, illustrated with 104 numbered engraved plates on 203 leaves (including 15 double-page plates), as well as 12 engraved in-text plates. Armorial bookplate to the pastedown of each volume. In very good condition. One of the giants of Venetian Renaissance architecture of the 16th century, Andrea Palladio based his designs on the values of Greek architecture, and the traditions of Roman architecture as outlined by Vitruvius. He is regarded as one of the greatest architects in the history of Western art, best known for his villas (in the Veneto), as well as his palaces (Vicenza) and churches (Venice), all located within the Venetian Republic. His architectural theories were laid out in his treatise Quattro Libri dell Architettura (The Four Books of Architecture), which had a profound impact on building design throughout Europe and America. His style of architecture - a blend of Greek, Roman and Renaissance art, later known as Palladianism - accorded the greatest priority to maintaining symmetry, perspective and overall harmony, in the manner of Greco-Roman temple architecture, and was widely imitated during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Near Fine. First Edition. First English edition, first printing. Bound in full period-style crimson Morocco leather with elaborately gilt ruled edges and spine compartments; black Morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, all edges speckled, four volumes, 11x17", tall folios. Book 4 is divided into 2 parts, and all 5 parts contain translations and title pages in Italian and French. Copper engraved allegorical frontis and full page portrait of Andrea Palladio by Bernard Picart. Translator's preface, list of subscribers, and 218 copper-engraved plates, of which 15 are double-page, and 12 in-text engravings, all after Giacomo Leoni. Near Fine with light edge wear. Washed with only traces of occasional marginal spotting not affecting plates. A few leaves with subtle paper reinforcement; one leaf in Vol. IV with small loss to corner not affecting text. While the first part of Palladio's monumental work had been translated into English in the 1600s, it was not until Giacomo Leoni's 1715 first edition in English that the complete work was published. Leoni's edition ignited the great Palladian revival in England and its American colonies. Trained in Rome, Andrea Palladio's education extended from building practices to town-planning. However, his significance in the history of architecture is rooted in his study of ancient Rome, including Vitruvius: Palladio's observations are the manifestation of Renaissance ideals; this work is second only to Vitruvius in its enduring impact in the field of architecture. According to Printing and the Mind of Man, subscribers to this edition included "Wren, Vanbrugh, Hawksmoor, and Lord Burlington's mother." The total list of subscribers amounts to only 308 individuals, suggesting the total copies printed numbered only a few hundred." PMM, 92.
