Il bassorilievo raffigura il ratto di Proserpina. Proserpina, figlia di Cerere, venne rapita da Plutone, re dell'Ade, mentre coglieva i fiori sulle rive del lago Pergusa ad Enna. Plutone trascinò la giovane sulla sua biga trainata da quattro cavalli, ne divenne la sposa e fu regina degli Inferi. Dopo che la madre ebbe chiesto a Zeus di farla liberare, Proserpina poté ritornare in superficie, a patto che trascorresse sei mesi all'anno ancora con Plutone.
