Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. A later printing of the first UK edition of "Là-bas", published by the Fortune Press around 1943 (dated from the Preface). Translated into English by Alfred Allinson (though not credited in the book). ***Very good in blue cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked, with some wrinkling to the cloth covering, and some light surface rubbing to the extremities commensurate with age and handling. Head and tail of spine slightly worn. No bumps. Corners sharp. Fore-edge and bottom edge of page block rough-cut, as is common with this publisher. Spine tight. Internally near fine with neat ownership name and date in pencil at the top of the front free endpaper. Pages clean with no foxing. No creases or tears. No dustwrapper. ***230mm x 148mm. 216 pages including a new Preface to the fore, four pages of Notes, and six pages of Notes on the Bibliography of J. K. Huysmans by a member of the Société J.K. Huysmans, and English translations of Huysmans at the back of the book. ***'"Là-bas", translated as Down There or The Damned, is a novel by the French writer Joris-Karl Huysmans, first published in 1891. "Là-Bas" deals with the subject of Satanism in contemporary France, and the novel was extremely controversial when first published. It is the first of Huysmans' books to feature the character Durtal, a barely disguised portrait of the author. (Wiki) ***This edition uses the French title and is expurgated. This may have been so as not to be prosecuted for obscenity of 1934. It has been printed on thin, war-standard economy paper. It has been published in a larger format than other later editions. The book includes an unattributed Preface, dated 1943, a section of Notes, and a Bibliography. The most recent date of Huysman's books listed in either the Bibliography or the Notes is 1935, so it is possible that this edition of "Là-bas" was already being prepared for production before the outbreak of the Second World War, but was delayed in publication until after the war had finished. The address on the title-page states: 'The Fortune Press, London, SW1', so it is also possible that it was produced during a period of transition between addresses that The Fortune Press was based at. Probably, "Là-bas" was printed after 1943 when the Fortune Press left its address in Buckingham Palace Road, and before 1946, when it moved to Belgrave Road.***A Fortune Press edition of Huysmans: "Là-bas" (Down There) in very good original condition. A fragile book, of interest to collectors of the translations of Huysmans' works into English, and titles produced by The Fortune Press. ***The Fortune Press was inextricably linked to this author, and published many of Huysmans' titles in translation. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. The First Issue published by The Fortune Press in c1930. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Number '213' of 2000 copies issued on antique laid paper, numbered 51-2050. There were also 50 copies on Rives mould-made paper. The address of The Fortune Press at the bottom of the title page states : '12, Buckingham Palace Road, London'. No publication dates are mentioned. Light pushing Type to enter text Type to enter text and splitting at the extreme spine tips. The gilt titling to the top edge remains bright. Other pages uncut. Two small remnants of a former owner's bookplate to the front blank end-paper. The book was published with the half-title, limitation page and title page inserted onto a stub preceding 'the introduction' as issued (see below). Very light toning to the extreme page edges, otherwise the book is internally clean. The fragile printed paper wrapper is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Light edge wear with a little creasing in places. Mild toning to the spine, folds, flap edges with some light age related markings in places. The wrapper looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. There is some confusion over the printing history of this title by The Fortune Press : '. like its edition of 'Against the Grain', the Fortune Press edition of 'Down There' is comprised of the printed sheets of the Groves & Michaux edition, but with the addition of a new title page and justification page (on matching paper and using some of the same typefaces, so presumably printed at the same printer in France). Bibliographical evidence may be in short supply, but by looking at such facts as there are, and at the secondary evidence surrounding them, the only credible conclusion to be drawn is that the Groves & Michaux edition of 'Down There' was never actually put on sale commercially. As for the Fortune Press edition, that too is extremely rare.'. 'A clue to how many Fortune Press copies exist or were produced lies in the fact that all the copies were numbered and none of the copies that are held in libraries or that have come up for sale over the last few years have had numbers greater than 500. There is possibility therefore that Caton purchased only 500 sets of sheets, rather than the 2,050 that is the stated print run. There are, however, clear and obvious reasons for the paucity of copies of 'Down There' : it would not have made commercial sense for Caton to bind the whole edition in one go, for example. The Fortune Press edition of 'Down There' is a relatively sumptuous affair.it is most likely that, as he did with later and less expensive Fortune Press editions, Caton bound up batches of copies as and when he needed them. Another more serious factor affecting the number of surviving copies is that of legal confiscation, either by customs or in targeted raids. The Bulletin de la Société Huysmans for December 1934 (No. 11) contains a short notice about a letter received 'from an English member of the society' i.e. Montague Summers informing them that an edition of 'Down There' had been suppressed by the police. However, the Fortune Press didn't get the confiscated copies back and this must have severely reduced the number of copies in circulation.'.'The translator of 'Down There' is not named in either the Groves & Michaux edition where the title page states only that it is 'Translated by an Oxford MA' or the Fortune Press edition, which doesn't mention a translator at all. However, it is fairly certain that the translator was Alfred Allinson. .'. ' Both the Groves & Michaux and Fortune Press editions contain a preface written by Huysmans' literary executor, Lucien Descaves, which was translated into English by Frank Groves. The preface didn't appear in any of the subsequent editions.'. 'Although Montague Summers contributed to the bibliography and notes included in the subsequent bowdlerised versions of Là-bas which the Fortune Press put out in 1946 and 1952, he is not mentioned as having had.

Contemporary Bradel binding of half blue cloth over patterned paper boards, spine with a central gilt fleuron, double gilt fillet and date to foot, brown shagreen title label. Original paper covers preserved. Autograph inscription from Joris-Karl Huysmans on the half-title page: "A Henry Girard / Son ami / J.-K. Huysmans." An important association copy of a book that is rarely found signed. Henry Girard (1877-1935) was an actor, bibliophile, and intimate friend of Huysmans. Girard was part of a group that regularly dined with Huysmans. In his will, Huysmans left Girard a portrait of himself done by Jean-Louis Forain (now in the Musee d'Orsay). Huysmans also dedicated the second part of his book "La Bievre et Saint-Severin" (1898) to Girard. In the collections of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France there are three other books by Huysmans inscribed to Girard, as well as 27 letters from Huysmans to Girard. Signed by Author(s).

Livres.
