First American edition and first edition in English of Victor Hugo's masterpiece. Octavo, bound in contemporary three quarters calf over marbled boards, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, five volumes complete in one volume. Translated by Charles E. Wilbour. In nearÂcondition, previous owners names. Uncommon in this condition. Victor Hugoâs âgreat novel has been hailed as a masterpiece of popular literature, an epic poem in prose about God, humanity, and Hugo⦠Hugo hoped that Les Misà rables would be one of if not the âprincipal summitsâ of his body of works. Despite its length, complexity, and occasionally unbelievable plot and characterization, it remains a masterpiece of popular literature. It anticipates Balzac in its realism, but in its flights of imagination and lyricism, its theme of redemption, and its melding of myth and history, it is uniquely Hugoâ (Dolbow, 149, 214). Charles E. Wilbour was hired by the Carleton Publishing Company to translate Hugo's grand masterpiece, and he did so very quickly, allowing the first American edition to be published within months of its French release. The intense advertising campaign waged by Carleton resulted in massive sales for Les Misà rables, solidifying Hugo's epic in second place (behind only Uncle Tom's Cabin) in pre-Civil War American book sales.

Couverture rigide. - A. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Cie, Bruxelles 1862, 14,5x22cm, 10 volumes reliés. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. First edition. The FIRST EDITION translated to English and the true first American edition of one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. Five large volumes (@9 X 5.75 inches): Vol. I - 171pp [1 blank + 4 ads]; Vol. II - 164pp [4 ads]; Vol. III - 150pp [2 ads]; Vol. IV - 184pp [0 ads]; Vol. V - 165pp [1 blank + 2 ads]. Universally bound in publisher's brown/purple pebbled cloth with boards elaborately stamped in blind and titling in gilt on spines. Rare to find in original publisher binding - most copies have been rebound, often combined into one or two volumes. Vol. III looks mismatched, but all five volumes are from the same original owner's collection, whose signature is on the front free endpaper of each volume with an 1864 date. Overall, Very Good+ with these condition issues (see photos): spines lightly worn at head and foot; most of the gilt on the spines is faded; some general edge and corner wear; some volumes have some spotting or rubs; Vol. I has small old piece of paper stuck to front cover ; spot at bottom of pages in Vol. III otherwise text clean and void of any foxing - only light edge toning in some. Can send additional photos. Hugo biography by Madame Hugo: "Victor Hugo by a Witness of His Life," from same publisher, 1863. First American Edition; same size as "Les Miserables" volumes; 175pp [1 blank]; bound uniformly with "Les Miserable" in brownish purple pebbled cloth. Very Good++ with only key fault being it is missing front free endpaper; less wear than other volumes. This is an epic title, considered one of the earliest "detective" novels. Don't pass up this scarce title.
