La fortuna di quest'opera, che probabilmente nacque nell'ambito di una delle potenti corporazioni che regolamentavano e tutelavano l'attività dei pittori risale soprattutto agli ultimi due secoli, nei quali è diventata una sorta di totem, di manifesto della pittura a partire da Giotto, il gran maestro che secondo le parole di Cennino rimutò l'arte del dipingere di grecho in latino e ridusse al moderno. Sin dai primi dell'Ottocento divenne un documento prezioso per la storia dell'arte e per quanti ne potevano cogliere i valori storici, stilistici o filologici. Con l'edizione curata da Franco Brunello nel 1971, fu definitivamente recepito come il primo esempio di opera tecnologica rinascimentale, precorritrice di quella serie di trattati sulle diverse arti industriali, fioriti in Italia tra il XV e il XVI secolo. Over Cennino d'Andrea Cennini (1360?-1427?) is maar weinig bekend. Hij zou geboren zijn omstreeks 1360 in Colle di Val d'Elsa, een stadje in de provincie Siena. Cennino leerde de beginselen van het kunstambacht bij zijn vader Andrea en trok hierna naar de werkplaats van Agnolo Gaddi in Florence, waar hij tien jaar bleef. Vanaf 1388 vinden we hem terug bij de uitvoering van de Sint-Stefanusreeks in de Sint-Lucchesekerk in de buurt van Poggibonsi. Vervolgens vestigt hij zich in Padua waar hij zijn beroemde boek schrijft. Van Il Libro dell'Arte zijn drie manuscripten overgeleverd. Deze Nederlandse vertaling berust op de oudste en meest originele versie: een afschrift uit 1437 dat gekopieerd werd door een gevangene in de Florentijnse Carcere delle Stinche. Il Libro dell'Arte is niet alleen interessant door de overzichtelijke manier waarop de schildertechnieken worden uitgelegd, maar ook vanwege de tijdgeest die uit het werk blijkt. Cennino's verfijnde nuanceringen en zijn gedegen vakkennis maken dit boek tot een uniek document dat zowel voor de hedendaagse schilders en restaurateurs als voor de kunstliefhebber veel te genieten biedt. 430 g.
