Masuccio Salernitano (1410-75) was employed at the court of Naples. He "was the first storyteller from outside Tuscany to imitate Boccaccio. His Novellino has a great deal in common with the Decameron: fifty stories marshalled in tens, misdeeds of the cleergy, practical jokes on jealous husbands, satire on women, tragic and funny stories alternating, and stories with happy endings; but there is no frame, and the author is the sole narrator" (Oxford Companion to Italian Literature). Small stain at gutter near the end of Volume I, goudge in last two leaves, affecting a few letters, repaired with archival tape. Still, a very good, attractive set. One of 250 sets.
