Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Large Folio (440 x 345 mm), two parts bound together (the 'old' palaces bound here after the 'Modern') in a volume in contemporary brown calf, gilt spine with raised bands and gold title/fillets (the spine carefully redone in the 18th century), a copy uniformly browned due to paper quality, with the top/bottom margins a bit narrow, where instead the margins of the plates in the first part (the 'Palazzi Moderni') have been early re-margined in order to be uniformly mounted. Title-page leaf backed and restored at lower corner. Each part with own title, each with large engraving by Corn. Galle after Rubens; Palazzi Moderni: pp. (4) with 67 engraved plates (also double-page); Palazzi Antichi : pp. (2), with 72 engraved plates. Second edition (the first after the painter's death) of this rare and famous work on the Genoese palaces composed by Rubens during his Italian period; it is a homogeneous collection of drawings of the villas and palaces of the city. As a court painter of Vincenzo Gonzaga in Mantua, and diplomat in Spain for both the Gonzaga and the Spinola, Rubens was several times in the Ligurian capital, although the opportunity to deepen the study of the city's major architecture appeared in 1607, during a summer stay of the Duke Vincenzo in Genoa. Rubens first published (in 1622) the volume on ancient buildings at his own expense; the palaces were represented with the letters of the alphabet from A to K and only two bear a specification of the owners (Palazzo Tursi and Palazzo Pallavicino Cambiaso). For the second edition it was decided to publish all the other buildings in numerical order without consideration either of the supposed historical date, or of common stylistic features, but giving the name of the contemporary owners. The book had various vicissitudes, so much so that still today there are even two supposed "first editions", whose history is still controversial. In the 1652 edition, the Meurs arranged the plates under two separate title-pages: Ancient Palaces for the first part and Modern Palaces for the second part. Mario Labò writes: "How he got himself (i.e. Rubens), the material for the book, how he collected all these drawings, has been a mystery so far. Within certain limits, in his preface, he initiated an answer stating that he had collected the drawings 'in Genoa with some effort and expense and no good evidence of being able to prevail in part of the efforts of others'. It should be understood that he did some of the drawings, something was drawn by others upon his request, and furthermore he could use drawings already made by others [.]; he came to Italy with Deodatvan der Mont, four years younger than him, his pupil in painting, and skilled in architectural design [.] the drawings are poor, 'dry' but made in firm style [.] . Many drawings bear instructions, suggestions that the engraver used, accentuating the chiaroscuro with skillful punctuation and dashes, and the diversity of the materials . the notes reflect the genoese dialectal terms [.]. Evidently, while he was in Genoa, he chose the buildings, hired the draftsmen, and gave them orders so they could send him the drawings in Flanders." Fowler 227, notes that "most authorities agree that the second series of plates was not the work of Rubens". Cicognara, n. 4084; Berlin Kat 2657 (1st edn. 1622); UCBA II, 1787.
