This is a very good copy of the 1912 "best edition",mostly following the 1906 one but with new colour frontispiece (dated 1912) and additional line drawings. 126 pages and 50 plates tipped in onto brown thick paper interleaved into the text (not bound together as in some earlier editions), plus some full page and other line drawings by Rackham, cover also designed by him. Pages and plates very clean and sound, no foxing, tissue guards all present, no marks or inscriptions. Front and rear boards very good, typical sunning to spine with gilt dulled, short tear to top of spine also neatly repaired, brown endpapers, hinges and joints all good.

Lovely condition, the boards slightly yellowed, slightly splayed and very slightly bumped to head and foot as is typical due to the age, but please see photos, a lovely copy. The color plate printing process was developed specifically to reproduce the delicacy of the watercolors of Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of 250 copies. The other 20 being printed on Japanese paper and signed by Rackham. This edition is very sought after and rare in such condition. Barrie first created Peter Pan as an infant, living a wild and secret life with birds and fairies in the middle of London. Later Barrie let this remarkable child grow a little older and he became the boy-hero of Neverland, making his first appearance with Wendy, Captain Hook, and the Lost Boys. Barrie's novel The Little White Bird of 1902 contains the first sketches for Peter Pan. The narrator is 'a gentle, whimsical, lonely old bachelor', an author by profession, whose ambition is to have a son. He meets a penniless young couple whose own son David fulfills his desire. The narrator explains that all children in our part of London were once birds in the Kensington Gardens.
