Rilegato. Condizione: come nuovo. quarta edizione. Scrisse Giovita Scalvini che il Foscolo gli sembrava «abitato da Sc uno di que' dei che i Germani sentono passare nelle foreste». Sappiamo che il professore del seminario di Spalato soleva dirgli: Ugo tu diventerai un grand'uomo o un demonio. Altri contemporanei, soprattutto giovani, ci hanno lasciato il ricordo dell'impressione straordinaria ricevuta dalla sua personalità. Anche oggi l'impressione prima di chi studi la figura e l'opera del Foscolo è quella di trovarsi di fronte a un'individualità di eccezionale rilievo e vigore, a uno di quegli spiriti che Goethe diceva posseduti dal «demonico». Altri grandi e originalissimi scrittori dell'Ottocento, come un Leopardi e un Manzoni, presentano una fisionomia più netta e definita, più sicuramente afferrabile; ma non irradiano altrettanta forza di naturale e primigenia vitalità, di calore passionale, di genialità intuitiva e lampeggiante. Per le linee risentite del carattere e per l'ardore passionale gli si può avvicinare l'Alfieri; ma troppo più ricca, complessa, profonda è la personalità del Foscolo rispetto a quella dell'Astigiano. Se non possedette la limpida e calma potenza ragionativa di un Leopardi e non conobbe la chiarezza e l'armonia etica e religiosa di un Manzoni, il Foscolo non fu così schematico e rigido nel pensiero come l'Alfieri né così prepotentemente individualista e furiosamente ribelle nel temperamento. Dall'Alfieri egli ereditò soprattutto il culto dell'originalità e della libertà, e la coscienza della missione civile e politica dello scrittore; ma accrebbe e trasfigurò questa eredità con l'apporto di nuovi, personali valori. L'affermazione individualistica e la ribellione libertaria dell'Alfieri, così radicali ed esclusive, avevano qualche cosa di astratto e di disumano, di tendenzialmente anarchico e distruttore. La e il suo cupo pessimismo da un sentimento oscuro di isolamento e di furibonda ira alfieriana nasceva dall'insofferenza di ogni limite esterno e di solitudine in mezzo a un'umanità troppo piccola e a un universo il Foscolo, quanto esalta il valore dell'individualità e dell'originalità, stile, perché concepito solo come gioco meccanico di forze. Ma della libera affermazione della personalità, altrettanto riconosce quello della società e della tradizione e la necessità della legge.
