Prima edizione non comune in queste condizioni di conservazone, rarissima a reperirsi a fogli chiusi, di questo celebre scritto del grande scrittore, poeta, traduttore e glottotela italiano, Tommaso Landolfi (Pico in provincia di Frosinone, 9 agosto 1908 Ronciglione, 8 luglio 1979), considerato uno dei maggiori scrittori italiani del novecento, vicino a certe forme del surrealismo. Scrive Arnaldo Bocelli dei racconti di Landolfi "sono, propriamente, fantasie, composizioni, capricci in senso tra musicale e pittorico, nei quali l'estro, l'umore si accompagnano ad una strenua casistica e i motivi lirici nascono da una riflessione critica del reale, da un gusto formatosi all'incrocio di diverse letterature". Landolfi conseguì la laurea in in Lingua e Letteratura Russa a Firenze nel 1923 con una tesi sull'Achmatova. E' trai collaboratori di "Letteratura" e "Campo di Marte" fra i principali diffusori delle idee dell'ermetismo poetico fiorentino. La scrittura di Landolfi si muove fra il fantastico ed il grottesco, fin dai primi lavori come nel suo debutto letterario del 1937 "Dialogo dei massimi sistemi", con accenti gotici come in "Racconto d'autunno" del 1947 ma sempre con scritti caratterizzati da una prosa sperimentale e ricercatissima. La sua vita fu passata principalmente fra Roma ed i Casinò di San Remo e Venezia, con soggiorni più o meno lunghi nella tenuta di famiglia a Pico. Sempre schivo rispetto ai circoli letterari, fu da questi però ampiamente apprezzato e di lui scirssero critiche entusiaste Giorgio Bassani, Mario Soldati, Eugenio Montale, Carlo Bo ed Italo Calvino. Non disdegò però di collaborare con diverse riviste come "Il Mondo" di Pannunzio ed il Corriere della Sera. Centrale è nella sua poetica è una critica feroce ma ironica alle "magnifiche sorti e progressive" della moderna società ma non auspicando atteggiamenti progressisti ma bensì da un punto di vista conservatore ed aristocratico. Carlo Bo disse che Landolfi fu il primo scrittore italiano dopo d'Annunzio ad aver il dono di manipolare la lingua italiana a proprio piacimento. L'opera qui presentata rappresenta la sintesi fra il surrealismo e le invenzioni linguistiche di Landolfi con il suo gusto per le storie gotiche.
