Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Gut. XIII, 236 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Minimally damaged binding, slightly bleached and stained jacket, annotation on endpaper, otherwise very good and clean. / Minimal beschädigter Einband, leicht verblichener und angeschmutzter Umschlag, Anmerkung auf Vorsatzblatt, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - The Renaissance dialogue is the first full-length study of the use of the dialogue form in Italy from the early sixteenth century until Galileo. Drawing on a wide range of literary, philosophical and scientific sources, it examines the characteristics which determined the genre's unrivalled popularity in the period as a vehicle for polemic, debate, technical exposition and comic drama. Particular attention is paid to reception and to the place that the dialogue occupied within the evolving cultural economy of the Italian courts. More than simply an account of the development of an individual literary genre, however, The Renaissance dialogue is a contribution to the broader social and cultural history of the period. As representations of conversation, miniature dramas of persuasion, the dialogues of the Italian Renaissance constitute an extraordinarily rich - and largely untapped - source of information about the ideals and practice of communication in the early modern age. The Renaissance dialogue draws on this evidence to trace a history of cultural dialogue, charting the effect of factors such as the cultural policies of the Counter-Reformation, the realignment of social and intellectual practice which came with the consolidation of absolutist rule throughout Italy, and the gradual internalization of the psychological norms of a typographic culture. - Virginia Cox is a Lecturer in the Department of Italian, University College London. This is a full-length study of the use of the dialogue form in Italy from the early sixteenth century until Galileo. Drawing on a wide range of sources, it examines the characteristics which determined the genre's unrivalled popularity in the period as a vehicle for polemic, debate, technical exposition and comic drama. More than simply an account of the development of an individual literary genre, however, the book is a contribution to the broader social and cultural history of the period. As representations of conversation, miniature dramas of persuasion, the dialogues of the Italian Renaissance constitute an extraordinarily rich - and largely untapped - source of information about the ideals and practice of communication in the early modern age. The original study, written with verve and conciseness, deserves to be read by all those interested in the cultural history of the Cinquecento because of the he light it sheds on that history while it charts the development, or rather the devolution, of the dialogue from Castiglione's 'Cortegiano' (1528) to Guarini's 'Segretario' (1594). Contents: Problems of method. 2). History and invention in the dialogue. 3). The uses of the dialogue in sixteenth century Italy: commerce and courtesy. 5). Castiglione's 'Cortegiano' the dialogue as a drama of doubt. 6). The changing form of the Italian Renaissance dialogue. 7). The theory and practice of the dialogue in Counter Revolution Italy. 8). From the 'girevole strada' to the straight and narrow path. 9). From the open dialogue to the closed book. With notes, bibliography and index. XIII + 236 pag. Size: 23,5cmx16cm.
