Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition of von Neumann and Morgenstern's landmark work. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by John von Neumann on the title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. With the original âCorrigendaâ slip laid in. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. Books signed by von Neumann are exceptionally rare. âOne of the major scientific contributions of the 20th centuryâ (Goldstine & Wigner). John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern conceived a groundbreaking mathematical theory of economic and social organization, based on a theory of games of strategy. Not only would this revolutionize economics, but the entirely new field of scientific inquiry it yielded--game theory--has since been widely used to analyze a host of real-world phenomena from arms races to optimal policy choices of presidential candidates, from vaccination policy to major league baseball salary negotiations. âHad it merely called to our attention the existence and exact nature of certain fundamental gaps in economic theory, the Theory of Games and Economic Behavior⦠would have been a book of outstanding importance. But it does more than that. It is essentially constructive: where existing theory is considered to be inadequate, the authors put in its place a highly novel analytical apparatus designed to cope with the problem. It would be doing the authors an injustice to say that theirs is a contribution to economics only. The scope of the book is much broader. The techniques applied by the authors in tackling economic problems are of sufficient generality to be valid in political science, sociology, or even military strategy. The applicability to games proper (chess and poker) is obvious from the title. Moreover, the book is of considerable interest from a purely mathematical point of view⦠The appearance of a book of the caliber of the Theory of Games is indeed a rare eventâ (World of Mathematics II:1267-84). However, "it would be doing the authors an injustice to say that theirs is a contribution to economics only. The scope of the book is much broader. The techniques applied by the authors in tackling economic problems are of sufficient generality to be valid in political science, sociology, or even military strategy. The applicability to games proper (chess and poker) is obvious from the title. Moreover, the book is of considerable interest from a purely mathematical point of view." (Hurwicz in World of Mathematics, vol 2). In the words of two Nobel Prize-winning economists, "a landmark in the history of ideas" and a seminal work in mathematics and economics, which "has had a profound impact on statistics" (Dorfman, Samuelson & Solow, Linear Programming and Economic Analysis pp 417, 445).

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First edition. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING OF THE FOUNDATIONAL BOOK ON GAME THEORY. IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION. "Probabilists have studied games of chance since the beginning of probability theory. Strategic games, whose outcome depends on the skill of the participants in choosing a strategy of play, received widespread attention among mathematicians and economists only with the publication in 1944 of the first edition of John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern's Theory of Games and Economic Behavior." (Dimand and Dimand, "The Early History of the Theory of Strategic Games from Waldegrave to Borel", 1992). In subsequent years, "game theory, it may reasonably be claimed, has proved to be one of the more significant scientific contributions of the twentieth century. Albeit haltingly and unevenly, and in a manner quite unforeseeable in 1944 when the Theory of Games and Economic Behavior was published, it has affected not only economics and political science but also evolutionary biology, ethics, and philosophy proper. Within economics, particular areas such as microeconomic theory, industrial organization, international trade, and experimental economics have all been reshaped under the theory's influence. Although game theory initially came from outside as a critical contribution, it has now been completely embraced by the economics discipline, as indicated by the awarding of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics to John Nash, John Harsányi, and Reinhard Selten in 1994, and to Robert Aumann and Thomas Schelling in 2005." (Robert Leonard, Von Neumann, Morgenstern, and the Creation of Game Theory, 2010.) Complete with the rare "Corrigenda" slip. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1944. Octavo, original cloth, original dust jacket. Book near-fine with just a hint of fading to spine, dust jacket with light edgewear, and a little spine fading (a common problem with this book). An outstanding copy: The dust jacket is notoriously prone to wear and this example is one of the nicest examples we've seen. Original cloth, original dust jacket.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Bound in tan cloth with maroon printed label and gold lettering on the spine. Originally issued with a dust-jacket, but this copy no longer has it. Some normal fading to the label and boards. Crown of spine is a bit frayed, and there are some scratches to the spine and edgewear to the boards. Taken all in all, the condition is perfectly good, but not crisp. Binding tight. Text block tight and clean and complete. Printed on low quality paper, so pages are toned and there is a faint waviness to them. Previous owner's name on a white sticker on front endpaper (at I.T.T. Intelcom, Inc.). Title page dated 1944. Copyright page dated 1944. First printing/First edition. xviii + 625 pages. I do not see the 'Corrigenda' page that was added after publication. This is the foundational text of Game Theory, and an important mathematical landmark. (You would not be reading this if you did not already know that - so I'll keep this part short). Condition overall is Good; the book has been read and referenced, so it is not pristine as some collectors prefer, but it is the first printing of the first edition, from the collection of Mathematician Arnold Jones, author of "A Branch-and-Bound Algorithm for Multi-Level Fixed-Charge Problems."
