First edition of Pyle's second book, incorporating elements of the Gothic Revival and Art Nouveau in the style of a medieval illuminated manuscript. A notable effort in American color printing, this book was not one of Pyle's favorites, yet it (with "Yankee Doodle") remains unique in style and color for Pyle. His style in here has an Art Nouveau flavor very similar to Walter Crane's work, with elaborate and lush color lithographs and calligraphic text incorporated into the art. A beautiful book, difficult to find in this condition. 9'' x 8''. Original blue pictorial publisher's cloth binding. All edges gilt, floral patterned endpapers. Numerous full-page and smaller color illustrations throughout with calligraphic text. [68] pages. Moderate soil to binding, with some toning to spine and bumping to corners. Interior clean and bright. Codice articolo 53290
